Old Cans - anyone made anything ?

Post by Richard »

I'm just working on a new 'Green Living' section on the main site.

Has anyone made anything or found another use for them?

Thanks, Richard

Not drinks cans but food cans...punch hole patterns in them and use as tea light holders for outside...

If you use the kind of tin opener that leaves a smooth rim (and sharp lid) you can punch 2 holes at the top to put a wire handle on and use it as a paint pot. Or for turps to wash brushes in - though a jam jar with lid is better for washing brushes as you can leave it for the paint to settle out and reuse the turps. So you need 2 jam jars or 1 jar & 1 can, 1 to wash in, 1 to settle in.

I'll dig out a few pics for you Richard, they're on my blog somewhere. Pen tidy for your desk, tin cans are best for this, ali is too soft. Got to go out now. )t'

Punch one hole for drainage, then one for a wire to make a hanger. Fill with sticks, hollow stems and canes. Paint the outside like a ladybird and hang it up horizontally in the garden as a bug hotel.

Gosh, these are great, love it. Should I include any on the page, I will of course mention from where they came. Any photo's would be a real bonus.

Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, sorry one pic is out of focus, but you get the drift. You can cut ali cans with scissors. For the sparkly pole I cut the top and bottom off, then cut up one side to make a flat piece, cut that in half to make two pieces. The take a pair of large scissors and cut strips from one end, stopping one inch from the other end. Use a small pair of scissors to make the fringe curly like the florists do with their ribbon. Wrap each piece tightly round the broom handle and tap a small nail through it to secure it. Can't remember how many cans there are in it.

Lovely candle-holder Ilona. Are the edges sharp?

Steve - I don't frequent your barber's (funnily enough) but I have seen a bi-plane made out of cans, somewhere locally - along with a host of other things, motorbikes, a camper-van etc.
