Fume catcher for gasoline generator
Fume catcher for gasoline generatorWe've had a 6500 generator for a few years now, and it was one of the best investments we have ever made, especially when you consider the extremes of weather here. Hurricane Irene side-swiped us with winds and power outages, and we have been without power after many storms in the past, noteably a 5-day stretch after a brutal ice storm that stopped our province in its tracks.
One of the things we had wanted to modify was the way we exhaust fumes. The generator is under a roofed deck and there is a concrete floor, and there are plank doors to be opened but during a wind storm or blizzard it's a problem. The overhead eaves are mostly open to keep a convection current going, but we knew the carbon monoxide in particular was hanging just over the floor and needed some encouragement to leave. With leftover sheet metal and conduit from other projects David created this system, complete with a barn exhaust fan that plugs into the generator. It's worked a charm, though we are cautious and check the generator every little while for safety's sake and never leave it running overnight. It keeps the well running, and the furnace including hot water and it's wired to a house panel that also operates the kitchen and our electronics. So we have not lost food or donw t=without heat nd water since we bought it. David impressed me with this open fume system and nearly all of it is made from leftover bits he had been hoarding, even the fan and metal tape. Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul - and sings the tunes without the words - and never stops at all.

Re: Fume catcher for gasoline generatorLooks good and a handy price
Just one question, why the extractor fan? Couldn't it just be vented through the wall or is the fan used to disipate the fumes? Dom Ali Woks My World
Re: Fume catcher for gasoline generatorDom, it's because carbon monoxide is heavier than air, and sits just above the floor unless you force it up and out. And our snow levels are so high we can't vent at a lower level.

Re: Fume catcher for gasoline generatorIt should actually rise compared to air, however - you don't want the prevailing draught/wind to push it back in the building so the extractor fan prevents this.
Re: Fume catcher for gasoline generatorWe're thrilled at how well it worked- and we didn't want to attach anything to the generator or fan directly. No warranty invalidations, and it feels safer...
