I have a smallish one in my front garden.
I don't want it to get large, when should I prune it back ?
Thanks

I prune mine the first week in February, cutting each branch back to two or three squirls of leaves.

I prune lightly to tidy October time, then prune quite hard Feb/March depending on the weather

Just to add I have 3 - one too large because I didn't cut back hard enough in the Spring luckily its in a place that can just about take it. You can be quite ruthless (sorry that seems like a bit of a pun >dum< ) with the pruning, keep the shape you want in your minds eye and cut above where you see young leaves forming, you will be amazed at how much growth it will put on through the summer. (take out any spindly looking branches too)
It will be alright in the end , if its not alright, it isn't the end .

I agree, I hack into mine as and when, take out any unwanted branches and keep it small; I want the flowers for the insects but I don’t want it taking over that bit of the garden. It grows back soon enough and I find that it is quite hardy enough to cope with my random trimmings.
