First Egg

Post by wendio »

Having got my 3 speckledy girls last weekend, one of them laid first egg yesterday.Small but perfect. Bit of advice needed though, Just been out now, and had 2 eggs which again, perfect! but another one, a third was not in nesting box, and seemed to have no shell on? Any ideas??

Other than that the girls have settled in well, and are fab. Just hope Mr Fox stays away.

Thanks for help

Congratulations to the first, second and third egg!
They sometimes lay shell less eggs. All normal! Hens take a little while to get into the swing of things and all sorts of funny eggs get produced. Wrinkly shells, budgie size eggs and so on.
Once they lay regular and you still get shell less eggs, it can be a sign of calcium deficiency, but at the moment I wouldn't worry!

It's lovely when you get your first eggs, we got a lot of double yolkers to start with, and found them on the coop floor, outside in the run }hairout{ , but after a couple of weeks, they settled into laying in the same nest box.

I wash and bake the egg shells or zap in microwave for about 10 mins, then crush them and mix with the girls pellets. Supposed to help with calcium levels.
Mother of two, stepmum to two, all grown up and flown the nest. Grandma to Lucy, who's 12 and is my best friend. Two dogs, 6 Gingernut Rangers, and one lovely hubby!

Give them time and they will get into the hang of laying in the right place consistently and producing shells!

Such a thrill, that first egg. 4 of my girls are elderly and I occasionally get a softie - which I was always told was normal. As for laying outside the nest box - I agree that new layers can get caught short or whatever but mine do like to go into the corner of the shed where I keep the feed and straw. There's always a little pile of loose stuff on the floor and at the moment that's the laying place of choice.

All of this adds to the charm and interest of keeping chooks. Enjoy!
Bea; 19 hens (most of whom I intended to get); 6 bantams (which I never intended to have); old Benji dog and young Toby dog (who I definitely wanted). Three years into country living and loving it.

And the first 'full house' when all the new hens lay at once.

Yes, getting a "full house" everyday now and still getting excited each day. Its the little things in life that make you smile!

Mine indeed make a lot of noise whilst on the job. Great though. Love it.

Thanks for the help once again, very helpful.

Hens can be noisy after they've laid, but not as noisy as my 4 yr old grandson when telling us (several times) HOW MANY EGGS HE HAS FOUND (didn't mean to shout - but he does)

We had the first "full house week" since winter, last week. (Unless grandson has been sneaking in without telling anyone, other times - I didn't get any eggs a couple of days ago, but discovered where they'd gone)
