Very good emma. It would be a really rare thing for anyone to check up and I'm sure that sympathy would go your way.

Just a point of law.

PS - I assume of course that we're all declaring our profits to the Inland Revenue )de: )de:

The hens will belong to my 10 year old son. He doesn't pay tax.

What profit?? Outgoings are an expense. Food (they can check the bags and some people have!) and the litter. In the winter I have to buy them greens. Everyone can cost the run and coops against profit - the list goes on....

I am laughing now!!

After building the run, buying the chook house, the feed and water dispencers and the pellets, grain , grit, straw and wood shavings, AND not forgetting that most if not all money made from the sale of eggs is converted into chook food again------ I think it would take many many many years for us to go into profit..
But it still feels good to 'sell' the eggs doesn't it?? )t'

I declared my £72.85 deficit last year, but I'm still awaiting the refund!!!!!!

I think I once worked it out that so as to make a profit over a five year period, I'd have to own 150 chickens!!!
To earn a reasonably decent living, over 1,500!!

And the 'pay per hour' was something else!!!!

Just had a laugh about this.......

Think of the poo you clear up for 3 / 4 chickens and how long it takes, then

multiply by about 50 yike*

I'm also trusting you didn't take the Inland Revenue seriously!!

Actually, being a complete cheapskate, I think my initial overheads were virtually zero.
But doing it that way, the time consumption was very high.

I haven't the faintest idea if I break even on costs etc. I know I get about the same amount from the sales of eggs to cover the poultry food.

But look at cats - they not exactly cost effective are they!!!

Oh dear,
Reading this post, in repsect of making money from egg production, it seems like a point for keeping battery hens.....which we all know it is not.
The answer to reasonably priced eggs, is for everyone to keep a few hens themselves, like my parents did when I was young.

That's very true Wendy.

As far as I can make out, Battery Farms were simply produced to supply the needs during WW2.
I guess some bright person thought it was a good idea to simply keep them going after rationing went out in the early 50's.

quote
1/
it is not necessary to register as an egg producer if the eggs are sold to frinds and neighbours,at the door or on a market stall. They may not be supplied to a shop for re-sale unless the producer is registered.
2/
The eggs must not be graded and sold as SMALL,MEDIUM,LARGE,ETC.Again only those who are registered may do so.
3/
Eggs must be laid in clean conditions, collected regularly, stored in cool conditions and sold as quickly as possible.

i read this from a book!

To add to Dave's list, I also understand that you have to have more than 350 hens to be required to register as an egg producer.
