Do We Hear Cheeping???

Post by Totally Scrambled »

About four weeks ago our Lola went broody and no matter how many times we turfed her out she was straight back in the nest box. So we decided to give hatching some eggs a go.
We cleaned out the old rabbit hutch, filled it with bedding, sectioned off part of the covered run and popped her in. She sat in there for a week before we found a chap nearby who sold us 9 cream legbar eggs which we placed under her. She has sat there good as gold ever since.
Today was day twenty so we were expecting to hear something tomorrow or the day after. Imagine our surprise tonight when we put the other girls to bed and went to shut Lola's hutch up for the night and thought we heard cheeping. We sat for about three quarters of an hour and every few minutes or so heard another brief burst of cheeping. We couldn't see anything as she has the eggs well covered so left her in peace for the night.
The girls are very excited and want to be out at the crack of dawn chick spotting, I'm going to hide all the door keys so they don't sneak out and disturb her before we are there to supervise.
Fingers crossed they all hatch and they're not all boys. We promise to bore you silly with the photos

Dom, thats great.
I found it realy exciting hatching in the incubator but the first time you see a chick peeping out from under mums wing is simply fantastic. Good luck mate and I hope you get more girls than boys )t'

Yay good on ya Dom...yep hope you don't get too many boys. I have found so far the split has been 50/50 but with the odd numbers you always hope the balance tips toward hens rather than roos. Look forward to seeing the pics.

So far only two seen and we think it's one boy and one girl. All four of us were crammed in the pen, in dressing gowns, perched on a log at 7.30 until 8.30 this morning waiting for them to put in an appearance. The feeling is just starting to return to my bum.

What wonderful pics :) Are they auto-sexed that you can tell this early which are boys and girls?

Beulah,
Yes, they are auto sexing the girls have more defined markings, while the boys have fuzzy markings and a pale dot on their head. I will have to make sure I've got it 100% right before I have to deal with the little boys yike*
Unless anyone wants a Cream Legbar cockerel before it's too late.
