My vet may be attempting "the snip" on a cockerel

Post by chucky egg »

Hiya
As so many people would love a little man running around but can't take on one that is 'active' I thought this would be of interest.
I ahd to go to the vets - again- with one of my girls (I give up sharing as it has been constant and I'm fed up) and she mentioned a pekin she was looking at. He was only young so too small to see anything at the time. She belives she can perform 'the snip' on him when he is older and his parts are three times the size bless him. As you may know there have been suggestions that 'the snip' may cut down on the crowing so more cockerels could live.
There are obviously alot of fors and against this operation but saving a life? What price.
I'll let you know how it goes as I've begged her to keep me informed.
Wendy? There might be a chance for you after all so Tino will possibly play a smaller part in your life!! (1 year old yesterday!! )c( )

Oh yes PLEASE. Let me know if it works. As you know Wendy, about this time last year I was frantically trying to find a vet to do it on 4 cockerels. I was lucky enough to find homes for them all. But it was touch and go.
I have a cockerel very near me at the moment who is to be PTS on Friday if a home isn't found. It will be too late for him, unfortunately, so fingers crossed he gets a home pretty soon.
Last year someone said to me when I mentioned this 'and how do you think he will feel about this ? ' I did reply 'Alive ' because that is the alternative for most boys..
Tino and The Colonel will always have a large place in my heart and that reminds me I haven't seen many photo's of either of my boys lately
Keep me posted. Oooh I am getting all excited now.

I certainly will! The minute she mentioned it you popped into my head :-D
As you said ALIVE is a big, big pro.
Good luck with a home:
www.pekinbantams.com tend to be more for breeding so you could try putting him on there. Some have alot of room and if he is pretty (aren't they all) could be bred from. Not my cup of tea but better than the chop.
Good luck with him, it must drive you potty with the time ticking away like that.
i never get tthe time at work to get to grips with photbucket. I promise to send you an up to date photo though. He has changed quite alot! Very cheeky.

I know caponising is illegal, so are we talking a totally different procedure?

Yep caponising is a pellet of hormones injected under the skin of the neck If I remember. Why it should be for a pet I don't know. They stopped it because it was done to eating birds and people were getting the hormones as well
Hopefully this would be actual castration.
