So this has been my cheap & cheerful solution....chicken carpet
I've re-seeded under neath to give it it's best chance of recovery, it's lovely & soft on the girls feet too, they still have stacks of places to dig in under their hedge, so everyones a winner, I can just mow over the top of it once the grass is through & it's bedded in a bit. It's also where i walk a lot, so the area was going to go boggy in the winter. (yes I'm already thinking winter, & the house has gone on the market today, it makes it all look neater)
