where can i find breeders or when i can find different breed

Post by mrsfoot »

Im thinking when i extend my coop in the spring of getting a couple of different breeds to colour up the place a bit. Ive got a couple of warrens and i see some beautiful breeds on here that im thinking maybe of going for something different.

Any recommendations?

Also How can i find local breeders or place to buy them?

Well I wanted Black Rocks again, and I googled and found a map.
Richard has a page on the main site of breeders, if they have a website you might find out what breeds they sell.
Do you know what breed you want? If you tell us where you are (or change your profile so that it shows), someone might recommend someone local.

Ive been looking a little into either a miss pepperpot, barneveder and faverolle. They look lovely and sound suitable from the little ive read so far.

I know there is a wealth of knowledge on here so id like to hear.

The chap we got all our girls from is in Derbyshire, when we first went to him there was a family from Birmingham just about to leave after collecting their POLs. If you want his number let me know. He has all different hybrids. We got a selection.
New to chicken keeping so please be patient with me!

I have just added 2 to my flock - we chose hybrids again- we now have a Rhode Rock - (rhode island / black rock cross) and a Columbian Blacktail!! We chose the second one 'cos my son said it sounded like a dr-ugs baron! There is a place called the Poultry Park near us in Glos - he breeds lots of wonderful pure breed chooks and a range of lovely hybrids. He also supplies housing, advice etc and they are all vaccinated.
The birds are really healthy, very pretty and laying like mad. They have had a few scraps with the oldies but have now sorted out the pecking order and peace has been restored.

I think it's a really good idea to research as much as you can.

By the sound of it you are looking for something pretty, looks more important than egg laying I mean. There are a lot of breeders on the internet with pictures of a wide range of purebreed and hybrid birds.

Obviously by buying purebreed you will be paying more. Hybrids tend to go for about £8 - £12 as has been mentioned on the forum on other threads. Purebreeds can average about £30 each and can go for a lot higher. Definitely a good idea to buy from a reputable breeder in your area.

Think you are getting some good advice from others here, and am sure a few more people will post (perhaps adding a few pics of various breeds which might assist).

Good luck with getting your new chooks!

Hi

This place sells Miss Pepperpot chickens. I'm rubbish at geography so don't know if they are anywhere near you! Omlet suply Miss Pepperpots with their Eglus so you could try them, they used to have a big page of breeders but I couldn't see it when I looked just now...

I'm confused :?

Is a Miss Pepperpot similar in breeding to a black rock? Just the pics I saw on the link had what looked like a blackrock with the tag Miss Pepperpot/black rock on it.

The good layers are usually Hybrids and crossed for that reason!

I will soon be told if i am wrong LOL

I dont know much about pure breeds but if its eggs you want hybrids can be very pretty!

Have a look here

Hi, I get Practical Poultry magazine every month and in their they list the breeders in areas all over the uk. I picked three from my area and went to see them before embarking on buying any.

It is a very good magazine.

Good luck with your chooks, I have a mixed bunch and they are all absolutely gorgeous. I am now having 6 eggs a day from 10 hens.
