We're in business!!

Post by Speckledhen »

Hi all,

Had my first egg today from my girls!! It is only about the size of a bantams egg and has a very thin shell, but still it is an egg!

No idea which one laid it, although suspect it was Clementine or Daisy as they are the biggest and Clem in particular has a nice red comb. I read somewhere (probably on here) that that is one of the signs with young birds that they are getting ready to lay (the combs getting bigger and darker that is).

One thing perplexing me slightly is that they are only about fourteen weeks old (supposedly), but my Maran types in particular are quite a bit bigger than the others. Are Marans a big breed or do you think that maybe I've got a couple that are a bit older than the others?!

Daisy and Clem are Marans Cou Cous (that's what the breeders they came from call them anyway - a Marans hybrid basically). :)

Congrats Michele on your eggs!
2 of mine are laying out of the three, and I sold my first 6 eggs...not that I'm hoping to make much off them but I'm getting between 8 and 12 a week.

I'm getting 2 Polands next week!!!

Somewhat like this! (just not frizzles) I would love some frizzles![/img]

Hi Emma,

You're quite near me (I'm in Paddock Wood).

I have to say I was very pleased with my girls this morning, especially as we weren't expecting any eggs until the end of the month!

Michele :)

Congratulations on your first egg, albeit a small one.

Is that a chicken or a floor mop LOL
I have just seen a photo of a grey frizzle, looks like a very bad hair day.

I think frizzles are really excellent looking birds! They are really friendly too.
