Nesting sites

Post by Speckledhen »

Hi all,

Last week one of my hens, Gladys, started laying (hooray!!)

However, she is not laying her eggs in their very cosy purpose built house, oh no! She is laying her eggs in the grass box to a lawnmover which is in the shed. :?

Has anyone else got any examples of strange nesting sites?

Michele

Mine have been very good, laying where I want them to. But I know what you perceive to be a good 'nesting' site, doesn't always figure with them LOL

I use old copies of the Daily Telegraph as underlay for the Nest Boxes (I use the term loosely).

As I was doing this I thought it a good opportunity to teach them to read.

After attaining a reasonable level, I placed 'No Entry' signs around certain areas and thus far, they are abiding by them.

Obviously, they are fully literate yet, but I did find one of them writing to the Editor the other day.

Sorry, stupid sense of humour tonight!!

Have you seen the Chicken Nest Box page....

Hi Richard,

I hadn't seen that page - very good. I was wondering if she hadn't laid in the nesting boxes to their house because it was too dark, but that wouldn't appear to be the case. Maybe she's being an individual (and why not).

Actually she hasn't laid for the last two days, so now I'm panicking that she's egg bound!!

I had one that used to lay under the stairs in a bag.
I also line the floor with old friday ads....the chucks complained though cuz everytime they phoned up about something it had already gone.... bum bum!
Not one of my chucks will lay ion a nest box. There are five coops and four runs (long story) and they prefer if possible to lay in the 'others'' coop if running free in the garden. If not then in plant pots etc thatt I've ended up leaving around the place (the low, round ones used for crocuses and such). I think if their happy leave 'em be!

Hi Wendy,

How sweet!!

I line the floor of their house with old newspapers, "The Independent" if I remember to bring old copies home from work; thought I'd go for the high brow end of the market!
