Blind Giblet & friends at Chickenopolous
Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousBrilliant news! Pictures needed obviously
That's an interesting one, I've never thought about intros of boys. You would assume they wouldn't need it but knowing how feisty our girls can be, I guess it's best to take precautions. Wouldn't want Tiny sitting on him I'[m sure a name will come when you see him. I find that my hens kind of name themselves after a while. Karen

why. Yesterday ds & I manhandled her for a good inspection, & we found a lump on top of the webbing part of her foot. Thinking it was a bumble we looked underneath it & found a hard black lump (it had been hiding in a wrinkle) I had a pick at it & realised it was a big splinter of some sort. I managed to pull it out, it didn't bleed but left a neat hole - like a pierced ear, in her foot. We filled it with sudocream & I'm pleased to see her foraging with the others this morning! Poor Treacle! She is a funny girl, she's so huge, and she sleeps in front of the coop pop-hole. In in the morning when I open the door she likes to just sit there and look out for a few minutes - blocking the way out! It so funny seeing beaks and head popping out politely around her until someone loses patience, barges her aside & tumbles out! She still sits there for a while, oblivious, humming her little morning song! "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousTreacle sounds fantastic, I think it must be wonderful to live in a happy little world of your own
Poor her though, good job you noticed the splinter before it did any real harm. Don't forget the hibiscrub - that and sudocream, the chicken wonder treatment! Any news on your boy yet? Karen

--Immanuel Kant Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousToday I gathered warm water, towels, kitchen roll & scissors. Then I gathered
Treacle onto my lap & set about cleaning & trimming her bot! She often has quite loose poops & they just don't bounce off those fluffy bloomers! I had just about finished when I noticed some poop on her back, the more I picked out the more I found, it had gone right down under her wing, yeuc! it took ages to clean it out. Then she spent most of the afternoon grooming the bit I'd washed. So bedtime was rather a palaver tonight, I couldn't leave Treacle sleeping on the floor in the middle - where she was being pooped on by the girls on the perches! So I put her in the nestbox bit, this upset Pointy as SHE likes to sleep there, and Treacle is so huge it was rather a squash! Then I had to put Beany in - (she is broody in a box in the run, but since finding a weasel in the run this winter I don't like leaving her there at night) Usually I put her in the nestbox, but it was full of Treacle! So I put her on a perch & closed up. There was a lot of bocking, & when I peeped in the coop Beany had settled down in the middle under all the bums!! I pushed her aside a bit & left them to it. I think I need a bigger coop! I peeped in on Giblet & Tiny too, Giblet is also broody, so sleeping in Tiny's spot in the nestbox - Tiny was comfortably settled down on Giblet's head! Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousHi, I just cannot believe why chickens want to be pood on . My girls have all the space to get 6 inches between them . Cannot count them as all feathers and bits sticking out . They never stay where you put them .Funny to watch though.
Bob Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousAll this broodiness around seems to be having a strange effect on Tiny. She laid
her egg next to broody Giblet, then sat there for an hour. I moved her off the nest but there was no fluffing or growling, she just looked a bit confused then started chasing all the other hens round the garden! I think she was having one of her hormonal cockerel moments. I hope she goes back to being a hen tomorrow when Bill gets here! He's spending the afternoon in a sectioned off part of the run while they all get used to eachother. The girls are curious but not too bothered about him, except Misspiggy who immediately started crouching for him, before he was even out of the box! Bill is VERY loud - I hope once he settles in he doesn't feel the need to crow too much! "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. Bill was beside himself with excitement, he immediately jumped on Misspiggy then danced round all the others, they managed to dodge out of his way though. Tiny wasn't impressed by being chased up and down the garden! In the end he gave up & as Misspiggy was the only one that submitted to him she had to put up with his attentions. He then led Miss p & Bonny around the garden, flapping his wings and bocking at everything he found for them. They've all wandered off and left him alone in the middle of the garden now & he's crowing away...ooooh pretty loudly! I better go & speak to the neighbours today, I hadn't realised how quiet old Smidge was. "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
--Immanuel Kant Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousI've really enjoyed our first day with Bill, he's the dearest little chap! After the
morning crowing he stopped for the rest of the day & just enjoyed exploring the garden with the girls. He's extremely friendly, happy to be picked up & seems to really enjoy being cuddled. He followed me into the greenhouse & dh into his shed and was happy to be stroked like a little dog! By the end of the day I couldn't imagine the garden without him. Tiny HAS gone broody, so her & Giblet are piled into their nest together "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
