Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013
Richard's Growing my Own Diary 20139th. January 2013
What will I grow? Where shall I put it? A peep at the Vegetable patch this morning sends me indoors with a plan. I have been doing bits, that's extending some of the beds, the turfs going to the Chicken Run of course. Only two weeks before the Broad Beans go in!! Richard New Member? Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013Is that 2 weeks before you put the beans in the saucepan for dinner Richard ? Can't be in the ground - all my bit of garden is good for is rice - it likes ankle deep water doesn't it?
It will be alright in the end , if its not alright, it isn't the end .

Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013Hi Annie - you can sow some Broad Bean varieties down these parts last week in January.
February is probably better though. The only year I sowed them in Autumn they didn't do much. Richard New Member? Get more from the Forum and join in 'Members Chat' - you're very welcome
Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013I always start mine in pots and then I can plant them out later
Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013Well, I spent five hours in the Garden today.
I cleared loads of dead stuff from around and in the beds, raked up oloads of rubbish stuff like twigs etc and had another enormous bonfire, had one yesterday as well. As soon as I can I need to repair the larger of the two Greenhouses, I'm missing one of the roof panels and about three on the sides. The roof one is OK, it's plastic and just ended up in the neighbours garden unbroken. With the side bits I'll just cut some plywood to size and that'll do. It's a big Greenhouse so a couple of bits of wood at the bottom won't sacrifice any light, plus it saves me money! Looking forward to a few days of dry weather all in a row now, then get the trusty spade out and dig for victory! Richard New Member? Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013I started digging the vegetable patch today, still very sodden but has to be done.
After an hour I decided pacing myself is best, you forget about the muscles required to dig with after a few month's and I got hurty body! But about a fifth done, so an hour a day, when available, will do the trick. May put my Onion Sets in next week. Richard New Member? Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013We have an allotment. The broad beans went in last week and we hope to sow another lot next weekend. The area for the potatoes has been dug over and we hope to get them in next weekend as well. Garlic is coming up nicely; and we hope to get in some onions soon.
As for the garden - nothing yet. The chicks have free range and have turned it over a bit! We'll probably put in things that need daily picking - like runner beans. Have mustard lettuce in the greenhouse that has been growing all throught the winter - is great in a mixed salad. Might not be able to do tomatoes and peppers this year as we are away for a few weeks in the spring and there will be no-one to take care of the pots. Sorry - should I have started my own diary instead of adding to yours Richard?
Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013You must start your own Diary Greenhorn, looks like you're getting it all planned out well.

Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013Getting there with the digging, pacing myself !
The area I've dug in the photo - left is where the Sweet Corn and Courgettes will go and the finer raked area is for the Onions. Much more to do though. New Member? Get more from the Forum and join in 'Members Chat' - you're very welcome

You may have gone, but are never ever forgotten. Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013Looking good Richard. The weather has not been great and I hear it is going to be a late spring, so that gives more time for those lovely veggies to get planted/sown.
Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013Not much going on outside because of the weather.
The Broad Beans haven't shown thus far, they're in the Greenhouse. Here's a few of the tomatoes setting off on the Fridge ! Come on Spring ! Richard New Member? Get more from the Forum and join in 'Members Chat' - you're very welcome
Re: Richard's Growing my Own Diary 2013With great man pain I managed to weed and dig a bit more this morning (right hand side where Broad Beans, Beetroot and Runner Beans are going).
I was hoping to get the Onion Sets in but it was just too soggy so planning to that sometime this week. It's all about one month behind down the Lane ! New Member? Get more from the Forum and join in 'Members Chat' - you're very welcome
