Bills 2015 garden veggy diaries
Bills 2015 garden veggy diariesWell its that time of the year again ,after 2 really sunny but cold days have finally got inspired to make a start .Was up on the bank across the end of my garden yesterday trimming the rubbish down getting it ready for a dose of weedkiller in the spring.Off to local garden centre shortly see what bargains in compost they have ,i like to use tomato grow bags compost for my pots of tomatoes ,going to mix just a little seaweed fertiliser in this year to help prevent a magnesium deficiency see if it works .Put new cover on polly tunnel as other had split at seems ,put new one over the old one ,should be twice as warm now .Quick hello to my swimming friend Trish ,though not a veggie gardener enjoys reading how folks are doing with there gardens.Hope we all have a super productive summer and its off to the garden centre .
Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diariesWelcome back Bill, hope all is well with you & your family. I am looking forward to reading your diary again this year - good luck at the garden centre, hope you get everything you need!

Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diariesThursday 19th february
Well got all the compost in for Tomatoes and tubs and seeds . Tomato grow bags (£3.99 each get 4 pots from each bag ) are ideal for pots as lots of Tomato friendly feed already in but will add a little more seaweed enriched. Multi purpose compost 5 for £10 good deal ,i use for courgettes and Wendys flower pots ,mix a few organic chicken pellets in ,also line potato trench with it also mix chicken pellets in. Seed compost from good old Lidles used before and seems to do the job. New cover on polly tunnel straps over as very strong winds forecast for weekend . Girls all doing fine ,few bare bums and still been getting a few eggs not as consistent as summer but not had to buy any.Has been so wet this winter have been putting straw in run Still finding a few Parsnips in garden but nearly at an end now nice and sweet though after recent frosts.
Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diariesAll fine here thanks Bill, the usual colds etc as well! We are moving house next month so veggie growing will be minimal I think, what with having to sort out the garden and having a dog that digs everything up (ground & pots!). Think tomatoes will be in hanging baskets, potatoes in bags and some beans in pots, cordoned off from the dog! Might do a diary if it looks like I can get something growing, will see!

Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diaries
Will take time to get as you want it ,but getting your new house straight is a priority ,are you moving far?I had a golden lab that used to bury everything ,wouldn't plant me spuds for me though ,naughty dog .Will look forward to reading your diary if you get one going .
Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diaries welcome back Bill ... I have an image of you coming out of hibernation like a bear and now getting sorted ready for the new gardening year LOL
I need to get some compost, but at the moment I have been using the Verve version of John Innes no. whatever from B&Q for the chilli seed sowing and so far I've been impressed. The downside is that for a small bag, they are very heavy. That looks a smart polytunnel cover. Throughout this winter, I've been very lucky that my garden is well sheltered and even the strongest wind so far has not affected. Hope yours will be safe this weekend
Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diaries
A very good morning to you LL ,thank you for the welcome back.I think your image of me coming out of hibernation is probably not to far out had a very lazy winter and managed to put on 2 stone but hopping once i get going will shed it again,i try to swim 3 mornings a week but circumstances dictate i don't always get there.I bought a new polly tunnel to get the frame for putting a net on and kept cover for this one ,its now in its 4th year so not done to bad as not expensive on ebay .I don't bury my cover edges as most do but use a thin deal with 56lb weights on seems to do the trick but like to be safe than sorry when the wind is strong. I got some of the 100 litre bags of verve last year wow were they heavy used them for topping up my beds good value .Dont know if you have QD stores or garden centres in your area but there own brand is quite good works out 40 litres £2.
Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diariesDear Bill, I am a relatively new veggie gardener, so I just wanted to say to you, and all those that post here .... Thank you - you inspire and help me, and will never know it ... But you are helping as I read and get ideas. Thank you all.
Hoping to get out in the garden today, beautiful morning here on Exmoor, but a super sharp frost. TTFN. And thanks again.
Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diaries
A very good morning to you Carol ,how very nice and thank you .I think we all inspire each other in our own way ,it is nice to see how others approach there veggie growing and pick up there hints and tips and pass on any you may have yourself. We have a very similar morning hear in Norfolk lovely and bright but very cold and frosty , chickens aren't to keen .Please don't ever be afraid to ask from any of us that post on hear ,if we can help we gladly will.
Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diariesIf you like Rhubarb as we do now is a good time to think about forcing it to get some early tender shoots, i use some old plastic buckets bricks on the top to stop them blowing away ,taller would be nicer but they do there job.
Apparently you shouldn't force every year as can exhaust the plant so be mindful of that, once crowns appear then on with the buckets. Nothing better than a nice dish of Rhubarb and custard, especially for the more athletic amongst us who like a good run in the morning
Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diariesSaturday 7th March 2015
Got Tomato seeds under way this morning ,old favourites Moneymaker and Gardeners delight a really sweet cherry tomato.Cauliflowers seeds in pots ,leeks in a tray ,all in greenhouse ,Tomatoes on a warm window sill indoors . Put some Carrot ,Red beet ,Radish and Lettuce in ground in polly tunnel ,hopefully a few early crops to be munching on . Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diariesGoing good Bill, I've been busy today too, funnily enough I also have started my toms today!
