Dioxin scare Germany to Netherlands
Dioxin scare Germany to NetherlandsApparently 8 000 German hens were put down after being fed a fat that contained dioxin. This was a food additive that affected eggs shipped to the Netherlands prior to Dec. 23. Poor hennies.

Re: Dioxin scare Germany to NetherlandsThe moral of the story is only buy British free-range organic eggs (other commonwealth free range organic eggs available).

Re: Dioxin scare Germany to NetherlandsIts been on news this morning (surprise, surprise) that there are a number of these eggs that have been used in products and, guess what, some of them have (apparently) reached our shores.
Surely there is some way of tracing these products and having them withdrawn. http://www.freshstartforhens.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Dioxin scare Germany to NetherlandsUpdate - Dioxin has gone into poultry food in Germany, five times the EU limit. Some of the eggs went to Holland and some of these eggs have been liquified and come into this country to go into mayonnaise and pastries.
Germany slaughtered thousands of hens because this dioxin that was in the chicken food has been found to be carcinagenic (sp?). So that is obviously something to worry about - a product which could cause cancer entering the food chain. What is happening now, bloke on telly is saying "Oh its only going to result in tiny amount within a product - nothing to worry about". "You are going to have to eat a ridiculous amount of product to cause a problem". Well I for one don't think this is good enough! http://www.freshstartforhens.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning Re: Dioxin scare Germany to NetherlandsYeah, "acceptable levels" - acceptable to who? The issue of our health becomes one of economics andstatistical probability! Which of course it always has been - but it's really not nice to be reminded of it.
On a separate issue & a bit off-topic this is the same kind of defence that's been mounted for nuclear power, ie radiation levels within "acceptable limits" and some statistics to show incidence of cancer to be average within tolerance of this that & the other etc etc. Exactly who sets these acceptable limits all the time?
Re: Dioxin scare Germany to NetherlandsWell perhaps we should be thankful that we even know that this has happened, I bet there has been other more serious things happen to our food that we have been in total ignorance about.

Re: Dioxin scare Germany to NetherlandsThere are substances in food which we have been fed for the last 40 years that are know to be carcinagenic, but we the public are in ignorance. They are contained in additives and colourings and many of them are E numbers.
Amorant, is put into some cordials and is toxic and is banned in the USA and also Russia but was still used here in the UK. Dont know if it still is now though. Trouble is that even if you try to eat healthily because you care about what you eat, you cant be certain that it hasnt been either tampered with or genetically modified in some way. Because my children have allergies I have always had to read labels carefully and for many years have been concerned about what goes into food and where it comes from. Interestingly, before I had my own children there were no allergies in the family `at all`, but all of my kids have various food `issues`, so I conclude from that , that it must be what we eat that causes the problems. Its a great shame that you cant trust the safety of what you buy in the shops. At least I know what my chickens eat so I know our eggs are good. Its the best I can do. Does make you wonder though doesnt it? lorna I`m not a teacher for nothing, you know!! If I was clever, I`d be dangerous.
Re: Dioxin scare Germany to NetherlandsWhen my youngest step-son was a toddler, (before I came on the scene) he had dreadful behaviour problems. Today he would be deemed as suffering from ADHD, and drugged up to the eyeballs; in those days (he is 33 now) he was just 'naughty'.
His mother did not accept that, so she did some research, and using a trial and error method, found that he is allergic to Tartrazine or E102. This can be found in its natural form, in bananas. All products that contained E102, which is used as a colouring, were thenceforth banned from the house, and, because Chris loved bananas, he was only allowed them on Saturday because the effects of them would wear off before school on Monday. It changed his life. What's right with this country is the freedom to discuss what's wrong with it.
