Re: Kitty's hatching adventureWell here's a couple more pics of them, It was a tough few days, feeding them
every few hours including through the nights. Sadly on Saturday they started going downhill & all died over the weekend. It was so terribly sad. I was told this is quite common with newborn guinea pigs that haven't been able to feed from their mum "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. It will be alright in the end , if its not alright, it isn't the end .
Quote from the proprietor of the The best exotic Marigold Hotel for the elderly and beautiful Re: Kitty's hatching adventureon a happier note, the chicks are growing up fast, unfortunately I haven't had the
time to fuss them as much as I wanted to so they're not as tame as other chicks I've hatched - Perhaps I can work on that! But I've let them out into the garden with the other chickens which I've never done before & they've been fine! Smidge the cockerel loves being with them & finding food for them. The only problem was that Beany and Nettle the 2 mums would fight viciously with eachother, so I've had to make Beany & her chickies an enclosure of their own, she seems happy enough. Nettle her 3 can roam the whole garden but often choose to stay next to Beany's run look at those amazing frizzle wings! Beany's garden Nettle foraging on the rockery my guess atm is Beany has 2 boys and a girl and Nettle has 2 girls and a boy, based on feathering and attitude! Lovely pictures of your chicks, glad to hear they're doing well The talent for being happy is appreciating and liking what you have, instead of what you don't have

Quote from the proprietor of the The best exotic Marigold Hotel for the elderly and beautiful Re: Kitty's hatching adventureGosh time is passing quick, I often take photos of the chicks but before I can share
them - even the next day they seem out of date. This time I've been much more relaxed with the chicks & have ended up allowing them all to free range with the other chooks. Beany & Nettle seem to have sorted out their differences - although feisty little Nettle has an occasional tug at huge Beany's wing now & then. They all seem to know who's is who's but if a chick gets lost or stuck & cries both mum's go running. The only problem I've had is with the food, the chicks shouldn't eat layers food, too much calcium, so I've been keeping them in their runs for an hour first thing so all chooks can have the right food. When I let out the babies I've put the l/pellets out of their reach, but now they have wing feathers they can reach it! So the big girls now have their layers mash first thing, but growers pellets left down & oyster shell in a pot nearby. I hope that's ok for a few weeks. Anyway here they are - Curly - the one that frizzled (a girl I think) and Partridge the one that didn't frizzle(boy I think) Nettle's 3 - Curly, Blue & little Brown (3 girls or girl, boy, girl) Beany's 3 - Penguin, Partridge & Houdini (boy, boy, girl) Penguin with big hair such a pretty face - Partridge This is better than a heatlamp anyday! My only regret is that because of the cold weather when they hatched & the guinea pigs taking my time, I haven't spent time handling them so they aren't very tame. The first chicks we hatched would fall asleep in my hand but these wont let me touch them, I hope I can change that. "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. Re: Kitty's hatching adventureThey really are lovely chicks Kitty, not sure if Frizzles would do well up here too wet - the silkies just about survive but on really bad days they have their own covered run to stay in, maybe Frizzles would be ok kept like that too.
I didn't handle the chicks I hatched last year at all, just left it to the mummy hens. When they were seperated out at 6 weeksish I used to go into the run with them for a while each day and they did get used to being hand fed mealies etc, though the funny thing is they all wanted to sleep outside the coop so got lifted in each night with no bother. The legbars have remained a little aloof but I think that is their breeding but the maran, sussex and silkie are all fine now they are laying - they have become women of the world apparently It will be alright in the end , if its not alright, it isn't the end .
Quote from the proprietor of the The best exotic Marigold Hotel for the elderly and beautiful Re: Kitty's hatching adventureThanks for the reassurance Annie, maybe I can tame them more when the mum's
leave them then, at the moment they'll only take treats via their mum. I really would like them to be fairly tame as I think it gives the boys a better chance of finding homes. behaviour 2 boys & 4 girls, the breeder I got the eggs from told me this is a hard breed to s.ex, best to wait till they crow! which can happen at about 8 weeks. Curly here feathered up so much faster than the others I was 100% certain it was a girl - but there's some big red wattles suddenly growing so now I don't know! This is what they're going to grow into Hard to believe when you look at them now "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
--Immanuel Kant Re: Kitty's hatching adventureOh dear, I have Penguin, Partridge & Houdini in my conservatory tonight!
Beany decided she's had enough of motherhood, chased them way & went back in with the big girls tonight. Poor wee things were huddled together not knowing what to do. They're only 5 weeks old, not big enough to keep warm at night without a little help, so they're in a rabbit cage with the chick heater that I hoped to send back unused! At least I'll get a chance to tame them a bit- hopefully. "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."

Re: Kitty's hatching adventureThey'll be fine. Hens quite often do this at about 5 weeks old and they are probably OK to snuggle when they feel a bit chilly.
