Elderly cat with kidney problemsElderly cat with kidney problemsMy 18 yr old cat has lost so much weight recently so I took him to the vet , had some blood tests done and he has severe kidney disease..
The vet has put him on Hills prescription kd .......hes eating it both dry and wet food but I was wondering if I can give him anything else ? Thanks Dee x
Re: Elderly cat with kidney problemsThat diet will be fine Dee, maybe the odd treat of tuna in spring water could be given too.
Maggie Re: Elderly cat with kidney problemsThanks Maggie..im really confused as ive just read so many things saying DONT give dry food for cats with kidney problems ...
He does drink water and has been on dry food for years ...then again im now wondering if that's whats caused it in the first place Dee x Re: Elderly cat with kidney problemsI can't help but Hello Dee nice to see you again
Wow 18 that is some age Re: Elderly cat with kidney problemsAww, but he has done well to get to 18.
Difficult call isn't it with the food. As you know I am not a fan of dry. Why not do a bit of research online to see what you can feed an elderly cat with kidney problems. http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning Re: Elderly cat with kidney problemsSorry to hear about your poorly cat, 18 is a really good age.
I think, but you could check this out, that cats with kidney failure are better off on a low protein diet and better fed wet rather than dry as they get, in normal circumstances, more of their fluid intake from wet food and dehydration can be a problem with kidney disease, so the more fluid the better. I would think you could soak the dried kibble too, but would ask your vet about that, although I cant see it doing any harm tbh. Our cat Molly who will be 14 in Sept has had crystals in her urine and is now on RC Urinary. I do not particularly like the dry kibble, but needs must with her. She seems fine and was diagnosed about 2 years ago. Re: Elderly cat with kidney problemsHi Perchy...and everyone else lol
Had a busy year with a grandson .... Ive spoken t the vet about the dried and she is more than happy as long as he is drinking plenty which he is .. Ive bought some sachets of the hills food to ...all very expensive !! Ill see how he goes on but he seems more content since ive changed his diet ... By the way I still have one hen ...shes one of the ex free range girls who was very ill ...shes now around 5 yrs old.. Ill let you know how Scully gets on .. Love Dee xx |
