Wildlife of ChickenopolousWildlife of ChickenopolousA few weeks ago I set up my new trail camera in the garden overnight, next to
a dish of hedgehog food - (I've had this in the cupboard for yonks as we had no sign of hedgehogs anymore.) wondering what would eat it - probably a rat I thought. After a few captures of a cat rubbing itself over the camera! I was delighted to see a hedgehog eating the food!!! But lately more food than usual has been eaten so I set up the camera again to see what else has been at it. Result - 2 hedghogs! I'm so excited, I hope they're a male & female. I'm, going to try & find out where they're sleeping next. Thankyou Richard for the recommendation of the camera, it's great! I should find a way to post the vids on here, I suppose I'd need a youtube account? or is it easy to do it through photobucket? "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. Re: Wildlife of ChickenopolousYoutube is more friendly to use for videos in my view anyway. Less annoying ads. Easy to upload to as well.
Well done on your 'hogs :) We had a visitor, but haven't seen him around for a while (not since the weather turned wet again anyway, beginning September? ) Saw a brill idea for a Hedgehog house using a couple of half tyres. Did think we may have a go at making one. Re: Wildlife of Chickenopolousfor several nights now the food hasnt been touched. I've run out of the ready made hedgehog food so I've been putting out mealworms & dog food, but it's been left.
Either they dont like the food or something has happened to them I put some boiled egg & a little minced beef out tonight & set the camera again. If there's no sign by the morning I shall worry that they've got shut in next door's garage while they are away (has happened before) "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
--Immanuel Kant Re: Wildlife of ChickenopolousI was hugely relieved to see at least one hedgy on the camera in the morning,
it had sniffed at the food but eaten any. I have fussy hedgehogs! I got some more Ark hedgehog food today, the camera is set again, let's see what happens tonight! "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
--Immanuel Kant Re: Wildlife of ChickenopolousMaybe they are fussy, but maybe your garden is a good source of natural food for them.

Sunny Clucker enjoyed Folk music and song in mid-Cheshire Re: Wildlife of ChickenopolousHalf the food was gone this am (I put out quite a bit) & I caught a vid of the
smaller hedgy munching it. So Ark is the fav food for them! I dont know what's happened to the big, fat hedgy that used to come. There's no squashed ones on the road, perhaps its grown too fat to fit through the gap under the fence - (or its stuck in the neighbours garage) Or like you say Mo, it's founder nicer things to eat! Re: Wildlife of ChickenopolousWell let's have a go then. Here (if it works) is my favorite clip of hedgy coming to
get his food but finding someone else already there - and in the way! ....Click on the pic....... "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
--Immanuel Kant Re: Wildlife of ChickenopolousIt worked (opened in a new tab) Was it another hedgehog in the pot? The light wasn't marvellous so I couldn't decide.
Did you mean to show us all your photos? A handsome cockerel (that wasn't the word I typed...this computer has a dirty mind), some Aaaah puppies. I stopped looking when I got to the rude carrots. edited Dance caller. http://mo-dance-caller.blogspot.co.uk/p/what-i-do.html
Sunny Clucker enjoyed Folk music and song in mid-Cheshire Re: Wildlife of Chickenopolousha ha! my wonderful carrots. I dont mind anyone seeing the other photos Mo,
they're mostly chickens & other animals on there - nothing to hide! Yes that is another hedgehog in the pot, with his bottom facing out, the other one is trying to push him out the way. Re: Wildlife of ChickenopolousOur hedgehog took a selfy
still no sign of the big one, & nothing else is showing up on camera at the food dish so this one is eating it all itself! Should be nice & fat in time for hibernation. Re: Wildlife of ChickenopolousI was putting out ferret biscuits and cat food for 'our' hedgehog. Liked some of it, but was fussy about which cat food we used, always chicken flavoured but from different shops, sometimes he'd eat, sometimes not. He did like mealworms and sunflower hearts too.
Unfortunately, haven't seen him around recently. Re: Wildlife of ChickenopolousOur hedgehogs stopped taking the food so I put the camera out again & got shots
of a mouse, some big slugs & eventually a young rat having a nibble. I dont know what happened to the hedgehogs but I cant leave food out for rats. Now the rat has set up home in the chicken run, so I've left the camera in there for the last few nights pointing at different spots until I found where it was getting in. It looks like a young rat, probably a teenager - looks like he's playing some heavy metal on his MP3. "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men.
