Max - Our rescued Street DogMax - Our rescued Street DogI should be sitting here studying my Bulgarian language but I am totally lost with it so thought I would introduce you to one of our dogs..............Max, his story his here:
http://tinyurl.com/miletosdogs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" Max was brought in to the Belediye Kennels where we were working as volunteers when living in Turkey. He arrived with his brother and two sisters, all where emaciated and had obviously been mistreated as they cowered and dropped to the floor urinating themselves whenever anyone approached them. It took time but slowly they recovered and all turned in to lovely but extremely timid and nervous dogs. They were captured under the "Neuter and Release" scheme that "operates" in Turkey. We kept Max but his siblings were released back at Miletos, we would have taken them all (but at the time it was not feasible) as we knew they would not stay healthy or survive for long once released. It took a couple of years for my dog to accept him as family and we still have not managed to cure him of thinking all cats are for his breakfast (street dogs in Turkey actively hunt down the many feral cats for food) but we can now walk him past a cat without an issue but any that come in to his garden unfortunately never leave (strange as he is great with our chickens and rabbit). We have to be careful as anyone carrying what he thinks is a long stick (spades, brushes, rifles etc fall into this category) puts him straight into defence mode and he can fly if not under total control so he is still a handful at times but to us (especially my Better Half) you could not get a more loving and protective family member. Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogMy goodness Trev. He looks so like my little Valentina. I have had her under my wing 2 years last September.
She is a Romanian street dog ! They are the same all the World over eh. He looks gorgeous and he is very lucky to have found you both. http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning
Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogBless you Trev for giving him a home. What some of these poor animals have gone through doesn't bear thinking about and it will surely take a long time, if ever, for him to be what we fully expect from domesticated dogs. He looks a lovely boy and does look contented in his pic thanks to your care and patience.
I am now a widow and live with my memories.
Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogHe is beautiful Trev, love his colouring. He must have a wonderful life at your place.
Recently my neighbour's friend has adopted a rescue dog from abroad, and friends who winter in Spain are planning to adopt a rescue dog this coming year. Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogWendy - !!!!!SNAP!!!! I said it first so do I win???? Lovely picture Having worked with street dogs in Turkey you soon find they are very loyal, protective and lovable dogs even with their traits, but Max probably says the same about us "My owners have some serious issues!!"
albertajune and Spreckly - Yes he enjoys his life and freedom here, he was actually one of the reasons we moved here, shows how daft we are doesn't it but he has really developed since settling here. Unfortunately his siblings did not fare so well, last time we saw them and fed them after their release back at Miletos his brother although surviving was skin and bones again, one sister was lame on her hind leg presumably having been hit by a car and the other sister was pack leader and causing all sorts of issues. I have no doubt they will not be alive today. "Not all those who wander are lost"

Re: Max - Our rescued Street Dog
And I had just added you to my Christmas card list!!!! Still with compliments like that Max will not be able to fit his head through the door soon!!! He is so vain (sure there is a song there somewhere!) "Not all those who wander are lost"
Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogWell not good news for our lovely Max today, being unable to apply pressure on one of his hind legs we took him to the vets for some X-rays, these showed arthritis in his knee joint but more worrying what looks like a bone tumour above the same joint. The X-rays have been sent to a specialist at the Veterinary University for a second opinion, we should have that when we go back tomorrow then his biopsy and further blood tests will be completed on Friday, worrying days ahead.

Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogOh, Trev. I really feel for you all and I do hope that something can be done for Max, bless him.
Not sure how I missed this other than did not come back on here till a few weeks ago. Sending to you all. Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogOh that's not the best news.
Lets hope it isn't as bad as feared. Try to keep positive and keep us all posted http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogHow awful Trev. You must be on pins waiting for the results.
Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogHi , Harley my dog has cancer lump on her front leg , near middle joint . Has had two ops and cannot get it all ,hence it comes back . Not terminal but reluctant due to her age to operate on her again unless effecting her movements . Back legs are going as well , She is on a pill a day , needs to watch her kidneys /liver as not good to be on for a long period.
So what I am trying to say not all things turn bad . Hope for the best and expect the worse is a thing I have got used to with animals . Does not stop the worrying though . No advise on that , sure you are doing the best. just so expensive to do . Bob If you rates are cheaper maybe I should get passports for my animals and bring them over to you like NHS . Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogWell Max has a malignant bone cancer that has spread, after much discussion and considering all the options (including amputation, cutting out the cancerous part of the bone and rebuilding the leg, the list goes on...) we have decided to just go with the flow and let him enjoy the time he has left mainly because as it has spread to other parts of his body and there is no saying his quality and length of life would be enhanced by any surgical procedures or chemo/radiotherapy.
So...................now both our dogs have cancer, Max and Casey who has had a gum tumour for over a year and would need part of her jaw cutting out to remove it but at 15 years old there is no saying she would even survive the operation and she still acts like a puppy! Some healthy animals we have here!!!
You are spot on with the above Bob
I have no longer have any idea of UK vet prices but all the X-rays and tests etc. the Vet consultations and the Specialist reports also the medications to date has cost approx 120 leva @ 55 pounds sterling but local veterinary staff and their facilities are nowhere near up to the standards of the the UK ones hence the referral and the need to travel to the Veterinary University where the more modern facilities are. That is not knocking our regular vets who worked wonders with Casey who suffered some horrendous injuries when transported here and they left "no stone unturned" in their effort to save our beautiful Kangal previously. Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogAww sad news.
But you have made the right decision. Quality of life is important, not quantity. Bless you and give them both a gentle http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning
Re: Max - Our rescued Street DogSuch sad news but I do agree that you have made the right decision. We took a. 13yr old out of rescue and. discovered soon after that she had cancer which had spread. She went on for a year and really enjoyed that year, swimming in the local lakes and enjoying long walks in the local forest. We knew her time was near when she no longer wanted to go out. When the time was right we let her go and I have lovely memoies of that dear old lady who had not had a good life but had a brilliant one with my husband who is also now gone: They absolutely doted on each other and I like to think that maybe she is still having her swim in this hot weather.
Enjoy each day that you have together I am now a widow and live with my memories.
