Re: Agnes has taken a turn for the worst

Hi.. A hen with eyp really does get an upright 'penguin' stance, the legs look further appart and the lower abdomen becomes very swollen. This happens over time, with the hen looking 'off colour' at first. I had two hens I had to have pts because of this horrible condition. I've also had hens with r...

Re: Can anyone explain her behaviour?

Just a stab in the dark, but maybe she got stressed because of the larger hens and has just gone off colour because of that? (As you know stress can be quite horrible for some hens) As for her sight, do you think she's having problems seeing in bright conditions? I ask that because you said she find...

Re: When to stop 'helping' an elderly chook

Thanks for asking she's still going, slow & steady & can be found with her head tucked into her wing quite a bit, but she is definately eating a bit again. I think she is coming to the end of her days, but i dont feel quite so bad about it knowing that she's got at least a bit of food inside...

Re: Willows frugal February

Due to sudden emergency orders for my 'sewn stuff' I havent been able to tackle the kitchen cupboards properly yet but other than that my frugal Feb is going well. I bought both carrots and onions which were on special offer in Albi and made a big pot of carrot & corriander soup, and a big pot o...

Re: When to stop 'helping' an elderly chook

Pepi it was just to give her a quick boost while I had her on my lap feeding her anyway I've found that its quite easy to give water or a weak water/honey mix by letting the chicken just sit normally & holding the syringe to the upper beak - near the tip or to the side & very slowly depressi...

Re: My girlies are HERE!

Hens are really inquisitive and will have a peck at anything that looks remotely interesting. They tend to peck a bit harder if they see anything red, so beware wearing red varnish on your toes in summer :-D

My grandson has been hand feeding our hens since he could walk so no, it doesnt 'hurt'.. )t'

Re: My girlies are HERE!

Hiya, Is it weld mesh? if so you should be ok as the wire is far thicker than 'chicken wire'.. Ideally it should be too small for a fox to get its bottom jaw through as it will try to pull it away as well as bite through the wire. Hopefully the mesh is too small for the chickens to get their heads t...

Re: When to stop 'helping' an elderly chook

Well she is still with us - I gave the girls some fishy cat food on Sunday and noticed that our little old lady was going for the food but not actually getting any.. She was slow but even when she got a bit she sort of messed with it but didnt eat. So I took her in and fed her some of the Jelly off ...

Re: Has this happened to anyone else...is it my fault?

You are definately not alone I've luckily never had to experience or deal with a prolaps, but I think most of us have at one time or another felt terrible and guilty about something thats happened to our ladies.. You simply can't be there all the time so please dont feel as though this was your faul...

Re: Fox visit

I'd agree with Sara, if a fox can it will kill enough to 'fill his larder', then he'll come back and take one body at a time & bury it to eat at a later date..

It sounds a though he or she was frightened off. Be very aware now though, they can come any time of day or night.
