Re: Hens not eating pelletsHave you tried giving them mash instead. Mine prefer that to pellets.
Re: LBH 2014Been really busy this last week. All brassicas are in and seemingly doing well. Onions are planted, leeks too. There is one big bed that needs weeding, so I'll do that tomorrow.
Re: no eggsI'm getting one egg from 7 hens every now and again. Some are moulting, a couple haven't laid an egg for over a year. Hopefully those who do lay will start up again in a few weeks.
Re: LBH 2014Wow, I havent been on here for months. Everything is growing well. Ive harvested all my onions and peas. Ive had broccoli, dwarf beans, strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants. Ive got lots of brussels sprouts, cauliflowers and cabbages doing well, all those chewed ones in my picture have surviv...
Re: I've let down my 2 little ex batts and feel awful!Don't be down about it, It always taken about 2 - 3 months when Ive integrated hens. Ive always let them out half an hour before bed to start with, and hung around with a water pistol and treats, and eventually I realise they are are tolerating each other. Mine still hang around in their original gr...
Re: LBH 2014Ive had two goes on the allotment in the last five days. The first one I weeded around the edges and tidied up my rose bushes, and planted two hebe bushes. Yesterday I went down, and dug 3 trenches ready for potatoes. There are still more to do, but it's heavy clay, and I can only do a bit at a time...
Re: Maggies gardening diary 2014Its the same here Maggie, so wet and horrible Ive gone and done husbandry things, but digging is too heavy for me and its really frustrating. Still its got to stop raining sometime soon I hope.
LBH 2014Well, here we are 2014, hopefully I'll do better than last year keeping my allotment diary. It is so wet and squelchy on my plot, and last year I had 2 tons of horse poo delivered, and with the help of a chap on a neighbouring allotment took a morning moving it onto my plot. I've moved some of it ar...
Re: Lost Rosie this morningHi, Im really sorry to hear about Rosie but she went peacefully and with her friends and you cant really ask for more than that.
Probably a good idea to get more hens now while the days are shorter, I think it takes less time to introduce hens in the winter.
Re: Chicken themed xmas presents?I got just one Chickeny item, and that was a handsome pinky coloured chicken.
Re: Three New ladiesI've always kept new hens separate for a couple of months. My lot are vicious, and the newbies usually escape to the coop when they start laying, but have to be rescued and put back in their own corner. Eventually they sort of mix in and the chasing and pecking gets less till they settle down. We ge...
Re: Advice re Vaseline pleaseCalendular cream was recommended to me by my vet. Its antiseptic, and one of my hens had frost bite. Her comb healed completely. Vaseline is good for leg mites too.
Re: SoxHi Stef, You're still welcome to come and visit if you are in Cheltenham any time. Just PM me for my address.
