I had another lame hen yesterday

Well we have now had our hens for just over a week and it's been a lot of fun and a lot of stress too Worrying all week about Mia and her limp has been quite stressful with us not being experienced with hens. Then last night one of our other hens Coco suddenly started limping. It was only when we ma...

Re: Hot weather

It's hot here too. I gave mine an ice pop yesterday but they just stood and looked at it and walked away. Today I gave them a bowl of frozen peas and they seemed to like them and I guess as they were nice and cold they cooled them down a bit. I've got 2 shades on top of the run and a towel too but y...

Re: Red Top Fly Trap

We've just put ours up today. The hardest bit was working out where to put it. It says to site it no closer than 15 metres from where you want the flies to not go. If we put it 15 metres away it's too near the house, so we've put it up in a magnolia tree about half way down the garden and already th...

Re: Update on Mia with the limp

Thanks Wendy :-D

I also took a pic of Coco's bum as I'm sure it was full of bald patches last week and now it's all lovely and downy, in fact they all seem to be getting a lot of down on them :-D

Here is the latest pic of Mia's bruise, it looks so much better now http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b27/littlebrooklyn/Ex%20Batts/Photo-0010.jpg Also a little video of her trying to walk, I'm sure she is now putting a bit of weight on that leg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b27/littlebrooklyn/E...

Re: Skyline egg (It's news folks!)

Blue eggs, green eggs, they sound and look just gorgeous. I didn't even know hens could lay eggs that colour till I saw on here. I am used to just brown or white eggs :?

Re: Update on Mia with the limp

Well I think I trust the advice on here most of all so I'm going to just do a wait and see and try to stop being such a worry bead.

I will try and take another pic of her later on to see if it looks any better :-D

Update on Mia with the limp

Well it's now nearly a week since we got Mia and she is still the same. I phoned the BHWT this morning and they said to wait till next week and see how she is. I'm still worried, I've had someone PM me on another forum and tell me that her pelvis could be fractured or her leg broken and that has wor...

Re: can we have a chat about cleaning coops please?

I haven't done a big clean yet as it hasn't been a week since I got my hens. However so far what I am doing is cleaning out the plastic tray under the roosting bars every morning and just putting clean paper back in. I also pick any bits of poo out of the wood shavings in the nest box. I have been t...

I think they say limestone flour is a good source of calcium for them too, I'm sure someone else on here will know :-D

Re: Hand feeding?

I tried to hand feed mine a piece of pizza yesterday that my granddaughter wouldn't eat. I gently sat by the edge of the run and sat with it in my hand. One of the hens ran over and grabbed it out of hand and the main part of it fell on the floor of the run and they were all scrapping over some tiny...

Re: Red Top Fly Trap

I've bought one, but I'm not sure where you are supposed to hang it. It's still in it's bag in the conservatory. The dog hasn't noticed it yet thank goodness :-D
