Re: Cockeral advice needed please

Hi all, Thank you for your replies. I think I will try and stick with him at the moment and try to keep the coop as dark as possible. I dont really want to go down the box route as I would feel really bad (not his fault he turned out to be a boy ) Maybe I am worrying over nothing, there are other ch...

Cockeral advice needed please

Hi, Happy new year to you all. Could I pick your brains please? In October I bought 4 orpington hens from a lady who could no longer look after them. 1 buff and 3 gold laced which she said were bantams ( buff is, not to sure of the others yet) They are lovely and were well looked after but younger t...

Re: Moult seems to be over? Where are the eggs?

poor chooks, i know they look tatty when moulting, but we got ours for their personalities not their eggs, the eggs are a real bonus dont know what any one else thinks !!!!! I totally agree, mine are also pets. Out of 20 chickens I'm lucky if I get 3 or 4 eggs a day and one of those is from a banta...

Re: Price of oil central heating

Not much difference really then. Not really, I'm not quite ready to fit 900 litres in the tank, so was ringing round for prices, they said it is due to go up daily, but that could be their way of getting us to buy now. Unfortunately whatever the price is it has to be paid. Joys of living in a villa...

Re: Price of oil central heating

Just had our tank filled up ready for winter. We got 712 litres for €570.00 with VAT. Thats £503. How does that compare with UK prices. We've also paid about £84 for our turf to burn which will last us way past winter. How does that compare with UK. Hi, just had a quote for 900 litres, just over £5...

Re: breed advice for complete novice

Hi, I know what you mean by not enough chickens, I started with 5 and am now up to 20!! I have orpies and light sussex and can thoroughly recommend them, although I would go for 3 girls rather than two, or better still, two of each . Mine mix really well, but then I did get some of them at the same ...

Re: quarantine

Hi, I lost 6 young orpingtons to Mareks in pretty quick succession and before knowing what it was I introduced 2 Marans to the coop/run which I was assured had been vacinated ( from a different breeder but thats another story) needless to say I also lost one of them approx 2 weeks after the last orp...

Re: Tufted chooks?

Hi Madmum,

They sound similar to one I recently bought, although I'm sure she hasnt got feathered toes (I'll have another look tomorrow).

She has a tuft on her head, hence her name Molly Mullet. She is a Skyline and lays blue eggs.

Re: Quiet Chooks

I would say out of all of mine the loudest are the Light Sussex especially after laying an egg. I agree, my light sussex almost yodels after laying an egg, and god forbid you should open the nesting box while she's in it! However, both my Bovan nera blacktails, and my Speckeldys, are proper ladies,...

Hi Hester,

I have Orpingtons, Light Sussex and various hybrids.

I would say out of all of mine the loudest are the Light Sussex especially after laying an egg.

Re: Back to work, back to your run - What do I do?

Hi, I also work at a school, so my lot have also been spending a lot more time freeranging. I also have a large walk in run which they are in when I'm not around. Approx 2 weeks before I go back to work I cut down on the amount of time they are out, so it isn't too much of a shock when they have to ...
