Re: Miss Piggy's foot - is this a bumble?

I'm sure many of us have been caught out in a similar way. You can put tarps up and the wind can change direction, often during the night when you can't do much about it until morning. Even with tarps up, snow can find its way through even the smallest gaps. My chicken keeping friend has had great s...

Re: Miss Piggy's foot - is this a bumble?

Seems as though most of us agree that this isn't a case of bumblefoot.

I think the honey would be useful for Miss Piggy if the blister got damaged in any way and it would help with the healing process.

Re: Miss Piggy's foot - is this a bumble?

The link to the Backyard Chickens article is the one I also found and very useful to keep as a bookmark. I use small tubes (25g) of Activon Medical Grade Honey. The price varies where you buy it from and I usually pay around £3.50-£4.00. A tube lasts 90 days after it's been opened and a little of th...

Re: Miss Piggy's foot - is this a bumble?

Kitla, thank you for posting such a good photo and the up-date. I've had several cases of bumblefoot but I'd never seen anything like that blister before. I'm very interested in what Manda suggested and the info you found in the Backyard Chicken article. It's a case that's certainly worth rememberin...

Re: Rosie gone broody

Hi Gwenoakes What a pleasant change to see that a broody is not being 'sin-binned' in a wire cage to 'cool' her down and break the broodiness. If cooling her down did the trick, I would think the weather at the moment would be enough to do that! When my broodies won't eat or drink, I remove them fro...

Re: mice

I wouldn't use any poison now that I know our girls will eat mice. I've seen a trap called the Victor Electronic Mouse Trap (that uses AA batteries) and costs around £25. Can't say whether it works or not as haven't bought one yet. A review says you should wear gloves when setting the trap as mice c...

Re: Backyard poultry keepers survey

Did you register for the webinar? I did, and the access code for 'use telephone' was given on the reminder email that came at around 6.00 tonight.

Hope that helps.

Is there anyone else out there who completed the survey and asked to know the results?

Re: Bare back

Wendy

Thanks for posting the photo. It gives us the idea.

Perhaps somebody out there with sewing skills can come up with a DIY fleece saddle pattern for the non-sewers amongst us?

Re: Bare back

Wendy

Many keepers aren't as imaginative as you and have to resort to ready made! Any chance of posting a pic of what the fleece looks like before you fit it onto the bird to give us an idea of what we should be aiming for?

Re: Bare back

I can sympathise as all our girls are going through the worst moult seen in 8+ years! I've tried a saddle for bare patches on the back but the securing straps of the saddle can rub emerging feathers away from the bald patch! A bald patch on one of mine was nearer the tail and the saddle wouldn't cov...

Re: Chest infection?

My broody always sounds asthmathic but then she sounds fine when she's finished. I think it's a case that she eats too much when she's broody! See how she sounds tomorrow. I know what you mean about worrying ...

Re: What do you use on the bottom of the run?

Hi Bob I haven't used them but heard a lot about them. If you Google 'rubber chippings for chickens' you'll see it covered on one of the poultry keeper forums. The post is 'Rubber instead of wood chippings'. It makes interesting reading as the posts go into quite extensive detail about how the chipp...
