Re: Books for beginners

The best "book" available is what you read on here, this forum was invaluable to us when we started out with our birds and the advice is still so now.

Trust me, and welcome.

Re: Introducing another bird.

Well, that's what this place is all about ........ good experienced advice, that was my whole point of forwarding my question, it would seem that perhaps problems would arise and quite frankly we don't want to complicate or compromise what is essentially very good, happy and functional without probl...

Introducing another bird.

Although we have three chickens, we were wondering about the implications for the existing group if we were to introduce another bird. Firstly, I must stress that coop and run space will accomodate one more however we are a little concerned as to how the new bird will be taken by the others. Kylie o...

Our three are fine.

Our three (Kylie, Maggie and Betty) are doing fine at the moment, during March they produced 82 eggs between them.

Wishing everyone at DTL happy chicken keeping.

Re: My latest efforts (wind vane).

Thats a cracking job Shrek. The center post, did you buy it or have you reused something else? The centre post I have constructed myself from a piece of 12mm round bar and I have used weldable steel Bosses bored out to slip over it. The whole thing centres on an m8 grub screw that will lock N,S,E a...

Nowt special.

The Chooks (Kylie, Maggie and Betty) are all happy, healthy, clean, laying and things are pretty much as they should be. All I want to say is thanks for all the advice that we received back in the early days and it only remains for Chris and I to wish all members of DTL a very happy Christmas.

Strange egg.

We now think that all three of the chickens are now laying eggs (Kylie being the last to oblige, and only within the last couple of days). Today we had a very strange looking egg................ almost transparent/opaque with more of a "synthetic thick skin" rather than a shell. I can't pr...

Re: Winter lighting suppliment........

Why do you want to put lights in there? Personally I think it's natural for chickens (and other animals, including humans) to shut down somewhat in the darker months - natural and important for their wellbeing. I won't buy eggs from places that use lighting to try to improve laying, so I wouldn't d...
