Winter lighting suppliment........Hello folks, a question follows.... As the evenings draw in and the morning darkness is drawn out, I am about to tackle the issue of lighting (on a timer) for the coop so as to "compensate" somewhat for the lack of natural lighting. Basically, what type of light bulb would more experienced...
Re: maggots v mealworms
Thanks for the experienced input Steve
Re: maggots v mealwormsWe give mealworms as a treat most afternoons (in small amounts) however we have on two occasions given live maggots and the chickens couldn't get enough of them. I think that we may well give them maggots once a fortnight (about half a pint between the three of 'em) just to err on the right side of ...
Re: Dodson & Horrel layersWe've been giving our three chickens Dodson & Horrell layers not through choice but because it's what we started out with when we had the girls and they seem to love 'em. I will say that when the girls first arrived, the first few eggs were very pale and bland but now they have richer yolks and ...

Re: How many years...Four weeks for us.....
Should've done it yonks ago.
Two eggs yesterday !!!!As you probably know through recent postings, Betty the speckledy has been the only layer of our three girls. However, Chris went to check on the coop yesterday (as she does daily) and there were two eggs.
Someone else has started to lay, whether it's Kylie or Maggie we don't know as of yet.
Re: Thinking of changing the type of bedding. We use Strawsorb, it's dust extracted chopped straw and it's easy to pick the pooh from.
It doesn't effect my Asthma and bedding for the chickens is my department/responsibility. We pay £6 exactly for a huge pre-packed bale from the local fodder supplier.
Re: 3 hens and only one egg every 24hrsNot to worry.....
We have had our three chooks for a month now and still we only have one layer out of the three. They're all three contented and seemingly happy with no signs of anything wrong. Have patience, eggs will come........
Re: Chicken run constructionGood old hammer and staples for us when we built the ark. If your concerned about getting "hammer rash", then use a pair of long nose pliers to hold the staples whilst starting them off.
Re: Quickie worming question.... The product is Flubenvet. The time is seven days. The method is as per the destructions. When they don't make any sense, just mix a scoop (6g) with 2 kg of food and feed. I just tipped a whole pot in a sack of feed with some oil for my lot but I have a few . So it's a weekly "do" then Ste...
Quickie worming question....Basically..........
What product is recommended, how do you do it and how often does it need to be done? Thanks in advance folks.
Re: Advice pleaseI hope your chicken is doing well, more importantly I hope that your husband is doing well too. I suffered with a blood clot on my lung along with pneumonia some years ago so I know how bad he must feel.
The very best of wishes on both counts.
Re: Tree Just Missed Chicken Hut!Our Betty had a gust of wind catch her right up the backside earlier. Flap as she did, she had no choice but to go with it and see where it took her.
She came to no harm thank goodness.
Re: URGENT advise needed pleaseEverybody here is rooting for you, good luck and a speedy recovery.
