Re: HELP PLEASE!!

Thanks S S, I've already called the police but they're not very interested ( that's putting it nicely). So upset for my girls, they didn't deserve this and had really settled in, they were ex commercial "free range" from someone fairly local, and were doing really well. I've spoken to the ...

Re: HELP PLEASE!!

Thank you, the fox was only doing what comes naturally and I guess it's my fault for not putting a padlock on the shed.. The stupid thing is that the person has obviously been here before, if they'd only spoken to me I could have put them in touch with fresh start for hens or someone similar... I'm ...

HELP PLEASE!!

Not posted on here for ages but I'm wondering if anyone can help, I've not had chooks for ages after a previous fox attack but recently got 25 ex commercial hens, alls been well until last night when someone broke into the coop and stole 6 birds. They left the rest out and the fox got in and killed ...

OC's Frugal (& Healthier) February...

Been a long time coming, and I don't do new years resolutions... I stopped smoking two weeks ago on Monday, (40 cigs a day if not more, at £7 a pack). I'd always buy three packs as OH smoked too... there's £21 a day for 16 days saved already = £336... I'm using NRT at the moment which costs around £...

Re: Impacted advice please

Ditto all the above.. You can't feel a chicken's gizzard (and that's a really old word for it, normally used in cartoons these days)... I'd offer live white maggots and possibly live mealworms if you can get them, we keep Geckos and various other critters, local pet shop should be able to help you.....

Re: insulating outside of coop

Agree with Steve, Polystyrene and chooks, big no no... My lot go mad for it, but it can't do them any good... Last winter we were down to -14 degrees c here for quite a few days and nights, I had 15 chooks at the time and they were fine in their 6x4 shed, perched off the floor. Keep the coop clean a...

Re: Oh bother!

Beat this... Last week I collected a day and a half's worth of eggs (41 altogether) into my usual plastic collection tub. Put it down whilst I locked the chicken shed up, then promptly fell over it in the dark, breaking the lot.

It winds me up when I break one or two, but this.... {mr.angry}

Re: x battery hens

OK, quick reply... As Richard said, many of the posts here have been fairly strong. I think this goes to show how strongly people here feel about the welfare of our hens, ex batt or not... That's the reason I got involved with Fresh Start, and overall my experience with ex batts has been hugely rewa...

Re: x battery hens

Had a phone call this morning to let me know about this thread. Not been on here for a while with one thing and another but I'm a little worried about this... Suncaddie.. I don't see how you could feel conned as regards your ex - batts, I was under the impression that everyone involved in the rehomi...

Re: deformed beak.

One of the new girls has a what looks like a deformed beak, the lower beak is longer than the top. Is there anything that can be done? She is eating and drinking fine from what I've seen, I'm not sure exactly how old they are but they've been laying since the Summer according to the owner and her s...

Re: New ex-batt sneezing and coughing?

My first 3 took a few days to swap from mash to pellets, but these ones don't even seem to know what mash is I'm guessing they're not being fed on mash in the battery "farms" Lisa, I'm pretty sure they were on mash at the farm (didn't pay too much attention though to be honest, the feed w...
