Re: Miranda my Ex batt hen has just hatched 2 chicks

I wish I could. Got photos on phone but wouldn't know how to upload them. I couldn't even send them to friend in text Keeps saying unable to send? The last egg was rotten, the smell got much stronger and I thought it was safer to take it out. I put it in a sealable bag and put it outside. I was fuss...

Miranda my Ex batt hen has just hatched 2 chicks

Can't believe it's 2 years since I last logged in to Down the Lane. Much has changed here. I've lost a lot of my ex batt girls over the years, although Wee Craw lived to a grand old age of 5 1/2. Big Lou our big, beautiful cat has also gone to rainbow bridge, and Bob our other cat is 13 now. He has ...

Re: Our girls are roosting in the nest boxes

None of mine have ever roosted. They all sleep in and around the nest boxes. Someone on DTL advised poo picking each morning. Once you know where they go it's easy to clean. I keep a pair of old rubber gloves and just pick it up with the gloves. Your coop stays clean for longer doing this and you ge...

Oops I've got another one! 9 now...

Hi folks, just a wee update on my new girls. All 6 are doing well and my 2 older girls are fine with them most of the time now. Bridget (the migdet) is a spoilt little thing. The bottom chick of the pecking order in my house is always sure to get special treatment, although I've created a monster wi...

2 weeks with 6 New Ex-batts

Well I finally replaced my lovely old girls with 6 shiny new ones. We were only supposed to get 4 but came home with 6. I've had them for 2 weeks now and they are doing great. If we hadn't got the extra 2 we would never have had the pleasure of Bridget the midget, a firm favourite already. They are ...

Re: Do ex caged hens always eat layed mash rather than pelle

I've just got 6 news ex batts. I bought layers mash, I got layers crumble with my last 2 and they didn't know what it was. The texture is totally different. Mash looks like bran, powdery and fine. Crumble just looks like crumbly pellets. When I bought the small bag of mash,I thought it was the wrong...

Re: An Ex-Batts Ode To Our Great British Weather

Linda, I didn't see your poem at the time but it's so sweet. The poem sums these lovely little girls up. {hug} Everyday is an adventure for them. Maybe one day all chickens will have the dignity of a cage free life. >fi< We can only hope.

Never a DULL moment!

Since losing my old girls in quick succession, my 2 little ex batts are a little lonely and lost. Acting a bit out of character, but otherwise alert and healthy. Yesterday, I thought Flopsy had a bigger comb and wattles than normal. Imagining it I thought. Flopsy gets distressed when Wee Craw goes t...

Re: Another one going down

Aw, so sorry for you.

I've lost 3 old girls, roughly 1 a month for the last 3 months. Different causes for each one. My 2 ex batts are a bit lost at the moment we've gone from 5 chickens to 2 in months. Hope you get some better luck with your girls.

Re: Another ill girl! Compacted Crop again..

Thanks for all your help Skeksis. Suzie is now flying over Rainbow Bridge. She was a poor soul this morning. I knew she had given up the fight and it was her time to go. That's all my original girls gone now. I'm just left with the ex-batts now. I think I will put my name down for more right away t...

Re: Another ill girl! Compacted Crop again..

Hi folks. Not good news I'm afraid. There is no sign of improvement. She's very quiet this morning. Her breathing is ragged and she has no interest in food or water. The mass is down but there is still a lot of food trapped in her crop. When she heard the other girls out this morning she let out a h...

Re: Another ill girl! Compacted Crop again..

It is a plastic one with a door only. It's huge though, she is sitting on the bottle now and seems to be enjoying it. Bottle is well wrapped up in a towel. Doors open so a nice breeze is blowing through. Have softened the mass but it still appears to be stuck and not going through. It will soon star...
