Holidays!

We're off on holiday next week for the first time since we had our girls last August and I'm starting to get nervous and fretfull about it already We're only going away for four nights and I know they'll be perfectly well looked after by my dad but it means they'll be locked in their run pretty much...

Re: Chickens and Veg Patch just don't mix

Chickens any anything with a green leaf don't mix in our garden at the moment. Last weekend we bought two half standard roses (which cost a fortune ) thinking that the girls wouldn't be able to reach them. That was before Roxy decided to go into training for the Chicken Olympics high jump event She'...

Re: chickens at bed time

Hi Rowlie, I'm by no means an expert as we've only had our girls since August so this is our first summer but I'd say you're trying to put them away too early. With the light nights now it's at least 9.30pm before ours take themselves off to bed. Luckily we have a run within another very secure walk...

Re: North West England chicken keepers

I missed it too - had a problem with one of my girls last night so was outside most of the evening and forgot to record >dum< Was really looking forward to watching it as well and couldn't seem to find it on 'Catch up' .ang.

Re: Free ranging, how safe?

As everyone on here has said it's a very personal thing to decide. We bought a coop and run off the internet suitable for 4/6 birds but as like everyone else we very soon discovered that the run was no where near big enough for 4 girls. We then decided to build a larger walk-in run on part of the ve...

Re: Help Please!!

Hi Jackian, I thought I'd try to get some Limestone Flour this week as I've read it a lot on here but they didn't have it last time at my normal suppliers. Do you give it every day and how much? I thought I could add it to their mash in the morning as they devour that every day :-D

Re: Help Please!!

It's just over a month ago that I posted this item and when I got home last night I could tell straight away that Ranger wasn't right and the symptoms were exactly as before. When I let them out to FR she came out but just stood all hunshed up and could barely keep her eyes open. After Manda's sugge...

Re: Rain and ex bats

We have some shelter for our girls and have spent the last two weekends madly constructing another little house that they can all get in and scratch about in the dry. We've had non stop rain for two days and they've decided that all our effort was in vain and they'd rather be out in the rain anyway ...

Nail Clipping!!

I don't know if this is a stupid question but I've read somewhere that it may be neccessary to clip the girls nails if they get too long but how do you know when they're too long?? I've had my girls since August when they were point of lay and they have paving slabs to walk on which I guess helps to...

Re: Poo Query

Thanks ChookieBirdie, it's too small to really identify it as being anything specific but I suppose it could be. It doesn't seem to be bothering them anyway and I've noticed it on and off for quite a few months now so hopefully nothing to worry about >dum<

Poo Query

When I've been poopascooping I've noticed that some of the poo seems to have white flecks in it. It looks perfectly normal as on the poo chart apart from these flecks that look a bit like dandruff. The girls have been wormed with Flub a couple of months ago and they get Vermex every month. Does anyo...

Egg Shell Query

I've been grinding up the shells from the eggs and feeding back to the girls to help with the calcium levels. I usually add it to their warm mash in the morning as this seemed the easiest way for them to get it. However, I'm unsure how often I should be doing this - daily/weekly/when necessary??? So...

Re: How to fox proof a chicken run?

Hello, we've used a lot of scaffolding planks in our run. We rang up a local roofing company and they're usually happy for you to take the ones they no longer want. They usually charge around £3 to £5 but they're a good length and can be sawn up to fit. Hubby then staples wire to them and bury's it ...

Re: Girls in a 'Huff'!!

I think Mo's right. Now our girls aren't in the greenhouse I can't see them from the house so I have to go through the side gate and round the corner to their run. If I do this really really quietly when I peep through they're doing their normal chickeny things but if I make the slightest noise and ...
