Re: Karen's 2015 garden diary

I'm late with my diary this year, but I am well ahead on the allotment prep - everything is all ready and I am well pleased with it! All dug over, and it wasn't too hard either compared to previous years, not too many weeds really, although the bindweed is loving this wet spell. We put up a new gaze...

Re: Louise's Chicken Diary

There's no way to avoid heartache and pain if you are living your life CC. If you are thinking of giving up chicken keeping, don't let it be because of times like this - you might protect yourself from pain but you'll miss so much joy along the way. I look forward to finding out what you decide to d...

Re: Louise's Chicken Diary

So sorry to hear the sad news about Violet {cry} It is always difficult to lose one of our girls but some snuggle into our hearts so deep that to lose them is especially heart-wrending. I hope happy memories of Violet will comfort you {hug}

Re: Feather Eating

Dory Grey will eat feathers, and Pokey too, but only when they are moulting and they don't feather peck, they hoover up the ones that have been shed, so there's definitely an extra protein hit needed at moult time and perhaps just generally through the winter months. I noticed it when Ronnie was aro...

Re: My attempt to keep chickens.

Hey Bob, good to hear you & the flock are doing well! About your little house hen, if it's not a neurological condition, it could be something as simple as a protein or a vitamin B deficiency (commonly called stargazing or wry neck). My Ronnie had a protein deficiency when she arrived at ours, she w...

Re: Louise's Chicken Diary

Ah bless Agnes, she has finally decided that camping out isn't for her! Come spring she'll be back out there again, under the stars... :-D

It's so good to hear Voilet is still pottering about, pecking everyone and generally chickening. How old is she now Louise?

Re: Sandy's Pink Ladies

Oh what a pity about having to leave some girls behind, that must be heartbreaking {cry} Lockdown is a pain, there's no getting away from that - if you haven't had chickens before I can understand that putting you off, but if you have birds already you're going to have to cover them anyway . So sorr...

Re: The Henpals Rainbow Bridge Log

Oh dear, we are so sorry to hear of the losses in the Ped and Pink flocks. We send our condolences to the Peds and Pinks and of course the Pink Mummy. How very sad to lose two henpals, especially at this time of year {cry}

Re: Blind Giblet & friends at Chickenopolous

We have had terrible trouble with rats this year, at the start of the year it was just awful! They went though my shed and took bags of mealworms, and were trying to get into the plastic tub of seeds. They were even dragging boxes of unopened rat poison away! That seemed to do the trick and they hav...

Re: karen's chicken diary

All very quiet here and of course with lockdown starting on Monday this is the last time for a long while (probably) that the girls will have free reign of the garden. I've got my footbath and disinfectant all ready - virkon - and just now need to break the news to the girls, stock up on things to k...

Re: Blind Giblet & friends at Chickenopolous

I can't say I'm looking forward to it at all - my girls hate staying in their run and like yours are spending all their time hanging round our back door. They so desperately want to come in. Talk about an awful year. Still, I'm betting we'll all be joining them in lockdown again in January! Got to t...
