Hi Anna.. Re 'sunburn' (humpf..) They have plenty of bushes and trees to shade them when they are 'out' and I've also covered an area of their run.. not that they've got a comb worth worrying about between them!! not that they''ve had much sun to worry about either mind...... as for the lippy - I've...

Hi and welcome Tilly.. Its surprised me how many people have told us how they have always wanted to keep chickens.. They seem to have the same effect on most people - soothing and smile inducing.. I wonder why? (f+

changes in colour.

Just a quick reminder of a question that came up last week.... Has anyone else noticed their chickens faces (cheeks wattles, combs) and legs changing colour on a regular bacis? I thought they were supposed to go red and stay that way.. but mine change from red to black through orange and yellow at t...

How important is warmth?

We chose Black Rock chickens because they are apparently bomb proof and bred to withstand the most extreme weather conditions, free range in the Scottish highlands etc etc.. Not that we'd supply them with the odd balaclava and wellies and leave them out in a blizzard., they have got a nice little wo...

Best advice for new chicken keepers? - relax and enjoy!!

At the beginning of June this year we acquired our five Black Rock hens... Overdosed on chicken info and got so confused by all the conflicting 'do's and don’ts' that we ended up treating them like prize poodles.. Within the first two days I was certain I saw one 'yawn' which was a definite sign o...

Thanks all for your replies,
Phil - I'll be very interested in your 'colour observations'.. also as yours are 6 / 7 weeks older than ours, a recent picture would be great , as our ladies still have very small combs it would be good to get a comparison.

Chameleons or chooks??

We have five Black rock ladies now about 17 weeks old. I have overdosed on every bit of chicken info on the web and am now totally confused! I read that when chickens come into lay, their combs, wattles and face go red and legs turn yellow... great.. only mine think they're chameleons or something o...
