Re: puffed up

Its horrible losing a little lady, I think most of us know what it feels like to try everything and still have to watch them fade away. It sounds as though you did your very best for her but sometimes there simply isnt anything you can do.. I can fully understand your reluctance to 'put an end to it...

Re: cutting your own hair.

I cut my own hair for years.. This worked on me and gave a shoulder length layered cut. I brushed my hair up into a ponytail towards the back of the top of my head (evenly & making sure it was central) tied it up, and then simply chopped it off about 3 inches above the elastic.. I used to then b...

Re: Any experience with these breeds?

Beautiful Girls !! We had an araucana (beethoven) - very good at flying (well 100% better than most chickens) she was also the one who'd nip over a 5" fence every morning to peck and bellow at our neighbours back door till she came out and dug worms with/for her Our Wyandottes are beautiful lai...

Re: poorly hen - any advice welcome

re treats ..... Chickens are like kiddies, and love 'treats' whether they are good for them or not. They'll certainly prefer bread and milk and would likely fill up on that, or any other treat but then wouldnt eat the 'good stuff' that contains all the nutrition they need for their health which is l...

Re: Barnvelders and orpingtons..

I didnt even know that orpingtons were a 'broody' bunch... mine certainly wasn't.. And the barnvelder I have now is full of cheek and character, and a beautiful bird too. I have three variations of Maran , copper black, copper blue and splash, each one of them a totally different character. I stand ...

Re: poorly hen - any advice welcome

I too make the mash by soaking layers pellets in some warm water for a few minutes, they will turn into a porridge.. I then add olive oil (a glug) and a good amount of pro biotic (live) yogurt .. the chickens love it, personally I haven’t had one who didn’t I definitely wouldn’t give them bread &...

Re: Barnvelders and orpingtons..

To be honest every type of chicken can and will be terratorial - I've kept barnvelders and orpingtons. Both can be laid back but also fight their own corner when challenged. Some birds are more dominant than others but personally I've never found that to be a breed trait. Rather individual character...

Re: poorly hen - any advice welcome

Hi Kateg, Sorry to hear your little girl isn't well. Keeping Batties is so rewarding but the stress of their past lives can have an effect on them and all too often we can only do our best to give them the chance of experiencing freedom for a short while.. Is she moulting? Crop problems - Have you c...
