Re: Moles: A solution or coincidence?

Never tried that. Never planted garlic as Jim hated it, and i wasn't keen.
They bring up stones which don't do the lawn mower blades any good.

Re: Manure bricks for heat

I know people have posted in the past about using newspaper bricks. I can imagine few people buy newspapers these days and the freebie local ones are no longer delivered any more so getting quantities like in the past could be more difficult. True, and magazines and junk mail are shiny paper that d...

Re: Manure bricks for heat

I know people have posted in the past about using newspaper bricks. Think drying them was the problem.

Selling second hand items

Do any of you do it? I have a load of outgrown childrens toys and pre-Christmas seems a good time to sell. Thought I would try of Facebook local. Is it worth the hassle of using ebay and having to post things? What is a fair price to ask. I know I could take them to a charity shop or offer them on F...

Re: Halloween & Bonfire Night

Not much 'health and safety' back then. Though some of the bangers sold in boxes now are quite powerful. Unfortunately I grabbed the wrong bag out of the freezer and about 5 Brussel sprouts dropped in before I realised they weren't the peas ... too late to put them back in the bag, I ended up havin...

Re: Halloween & Bonfire Night

some of the older children used to put lots of bangers in the Guy Fawkes that was put in the fire. Not much 'health and safety' back then. Though some of the bangers sold in boxes now are quite powerful. But I remember jumping jacks being thrown around. As a 'blitz baby' I've never liked bangers.

Re: Halloween & Bonfire Night

I wasn't something that we had food traditions about growing up in London.
But when we were first married my Yorkshire born husband liked to buy treacle toffee in tin trays. I still use some of them, a good size for making flapjack.

Re: The Bumbling Keeper of Bees

I found it difficult to keep on top of the checking for queen cells, either the wrong weather or either my friend or I was doing something else. I found I couldn't juggle smoker, hive tool and frames by myself.
So when my friend moved away she took the hives.

Re: How does your garden grow?

I actually have honeysuckle growing in my hedge!! You sound surprised. It surely isn't flowering still. Though my hypericum is. Part of its 'take over the world' strategy. It spreads sideways but you wouldn't want to cut it while it's in flower. Such a cheerful golden flower that I put up with it g...

Re: How does your garden grow?

I picked my Cox tree this week, all 2 of them. And found that the birds had got them first. The one I've eaten (after cutting off the hole) was good and ripe though. The Kidds are beginning to fall, probably just the maggotty ones, the ones I picked were willing but not eager to part from the twig. ...
