Re: Smoked Eel

I love smoked eel, but it costs a fortune in the shops.
Lucky you! - glad you had a good time, and as you say, so nice for a youngster to want to do something fun that doesn't cost.

Re: Going cold turkey on new clothes

Good for you, plot45b )t'
I rarely buy new clothes. Hate shopping and the price of the rubbish on sale, mostly use charity shops where you get excellent choice and value, and you can always redonate anything you find you don't wear. Only shoes get bought new, and not many of those.

Re: My frugal desktop computer

Shame - I had one but freecycled it a while back. There's a fair chance one will pop up someone on the Lane, I'd have thought. Do you just look at freecycle listings or have you tried posting a Wanted? That's how mine went. I'll look forward to reading your blog - there seem to be interesting things...

Re: Hay fever

There is a natural remedy that works for me, and is worth a try - no drowsiness. It is called Combination H Tissue Salt remedy, and you can buy it from health shops. Follow the instructions on the pack and take 4 every 1/2 hour for the first 3 doses - it seems like a lot, but it stimulates the body...

Re: Hay fever

Sorry to hear you are suffering from the dreaded pollen allergy. Antihistamines don't suppress your immune system - they just neutralise the histamine released by allergic reaction. But the ones that don't cause drowsiness generally don't work that well. There is a natural remedy that works for me, ...

I've tried 1 oe 2 of the frozen ones - they are OK, but nothing like as good as the fresh.

Anyone tried the W8rose Fish-baked-in-bag thing?

They do this thing where you choose some fish and, at no extra cost, they seal it in a bag with some herbed butter. You pop the whole thing in the oven for around 30 mins and end up with perfectly cooked fish in delicious buttery juices. No smell and no mess - magic! Tonight we had whole seabass in ...

Re: frugal breakfasts.

How about making some home-made granola? Not totally frugal with the nuts, but filling so you don't need much for a portion. Very nutritious, too, with less sugar than bought ones. Mix oats with some honey or syrup, oil (walnut is delicious, but not frugal), brown sugar if you want it sweet, spread ...

Re: Lifes unexpected turns

As I see it, you have so much courage and enthusiasm, the right thing will come along eventually and you will know it when you see it. Meanwhile just carry on enjoying all the good things you have (but you don't need me to tell you that) and be prepared to grab that opportunity when it comes (and yo...

I was going to say fudge. Doesn't have to be chocolate, it's lovely with chopped stem ginger or even just vanilla essence.

Re: Sorry to bother everyone again

I'm another fan of beetroot roasted in olive oil.

Also lovely boiled and eaten with toasted goat's cheese and a leaf salad. For some reason the flavours really complement each other,

Or you could grate some and make beetroot rosti. I've done it with sweet potato and I think beetroot would work too.

I think what you are describing is the one called Cavola Nero, and yes, it is cut-and-come-again.

Have a look here;- http://garlicandsapphire.com/2013/05/09 ... volo-nero/

Don't see it would do your vet any harm to learn something new....
