Re: How does your garden grow?

I think it was cold when things should have been pollinated. My pears are not good. A few proper ones, some of the conference are skinny (they are partially self fertile, which I think means if they aren't pollinated the fruit grows without seed, banana shape rather than fat pear shaped. My Laxton E...

Re: How does your garden grow?

Other than fruit I've only grown runner beans this year. They are still doing fine (mostly going on the charity stall on the verge as I only like them fresh not frozen.

Re: Back in Time for The Factory

I started work in the 60s. At ICI women were on 80% of the men's rate. And it was assumed you were someone's secretary.
I remember buying a mini dress with a kipper tie. The older, longer dresses looked so old-fashioned.

Yes, I am happy as long as they stay outside. Not in the porch though. Wonder how many more I'll find.

Will you leave it to do its own thing now, or try to manage it again?

Re: How does your garden grow?

I came back from holiday and found that something had been eating my apples. Used to store them in the garage, OK for years then mice found them. So now keep them in the porch, but oh dear, I blame Tabitha, she brings mice in and loses them. Anyway I picked the last of the James Grieve and instead o...

Re: Watering cans and weed killer

Thanks LL. The watering can has stood unused for at least five years. I think the problem might be that although any water diluting the chemical might have evaporated traces of the active chemical might remain, which is why LL's suggestion of rinsing and testing on something that doesn't matter is ...

Re: My little dog Angel

Pets in the bedroom are better than sleeping alone, but...
My previous cat had fits and I sometimes had a drenched duvet.
Hope she's better soon. Yes things always happen at the weekend or bank holiday.

Re: How does your garden grow?

I have been busy picking Victoria plums. As usual didn't thin them enough so many are small. The ones that ripen first tend to have something inside them, either a grub or the frass that they leave. Or some sort of gum. Don't know what causes the gum but it spoils the taste of a plum if you find gri...

Re: ... and so it begins

You might think that that the rich act in their own interests so we should distrust everything they say. My view is that one of the things they say is denying climate change so that they can keep on making money.

Re: ... and so it begins

I was trying to quote and agree that the rich do what they like and expect us to follow their rules while they get richer.

Though I do think we (or our children) have plenty to fear from climate change.
