Re: karen's chicken diaryThat's true Bob, you are first hand witness to the shocking diva-ness of my girls Actually, once it's safer I am really happy to host another henpal meet up at mine again, if anyone fancies another meet up with Dory and Pokey (and Smudge and Coco of course). Not sure about eating at the pub - it's o...
Re: Chicken FeedYes i agree, they are actually quite low maintenance really and very easily pleased! My 2 new girls are following me around the garden after an occasional gooseberry and all of my lot eat grass out of my hand and think it's the world's best treat. Simple souls the lot of them!
Re: My attempt to keep chickens.Aw Bob and Cheshire Chick, you both sound like you are having tough times lately. Hope things pick up for you both, or at least you both get some clarity on where you go next
Re: Karen's 2015 garden diaryEverything is taking off beautifully now, the squashes & pumpkins have put on a good growth spurt and have a few fruits setting on them. Hope they don't fall off. The tomatoes are trussing nicely, the cucs starting to form fruit and the beans should be ready any day now. The beetroot have worked...
Re: Sandy's Pink LadiesI've PMed you Sandy
Re: Grass ProtectorI'll also second and third a run roof, so useful. Slanted rain and snow will still come in through the sides, so have a think about that if you're covering your run and especially where you're putting food down. Actually a meshed floor could be useful, not to save your grass (aint gonna happen!) but...
Re: karen's chicken diarySad to report that Mango passed away this morning, after a long illness. Not sure what it was but I suspect heart problems mixed in with problems affecting her crop - probably tumours. We brought her into the house earlier in the week where it was warm and I could at least try to get water and some ...
Re: The Henpals Rainbow Bridge LogMarking the sad passing of Mango over the Bridge this morning. Mango never really got over the loss of Little Will, but she fought right to the very end both to stay with us and to make sure she was never bottom hen. Remembering our beautiful and majestic Mango https://images2.imgbox.com/87/cd/JfQRz...
Re: The Henpals Rainbow Bridge LogSo sorry to hear about Goldie Bob, she was such a character I'm sure she wil be greatly missed. Apologies for not seeing your post earlier
Re: Warren Browns/ Rhode Island Reds - ideal agewell with most hens in their peak egg production within their first 18-24 months (that is when the farmers move them on) then you are inevitably going to face a drop in eggs at some stage, although the likelihood is any hens you get will lay regularly or intermittently for the rest of their lives. D...
Re: My attempt to keep chickens. How are you feeding Big N Bob? I got some harrison's recovery formula for Mango but she's not interested and I can't even open her beak to try and get some in...
Re: Warren Browns/ Rhode Island Reds - ideal ageEx commercial hens - the rehoming orgs usually ask for a donation to cover their costs. Fresh Start For Hens ask for £2.50 per bird but of course you can give more! I think if you went to a poultry auction you can probably pick up birds cheap as well but I doubt there are any on at the minute. I wou...
Re: Kitty's Gardenning AdventuresOooh you're early! I'm nowhere near picking!
Re: Karen's 2015 garden diaryEverything is growing really well now, starting to take off. The gooseberries at the lotty were stripped before we even had a chance to get any berries - not a big deal as we don't really like them much, but I had promised my allotment neighbour (who is also a good friend) he could have them for his...
Re: karen's chicken diaryMango is preferig to spend her days in our kitchen now, hovered over the cat's bowl. She is going downhill rapidly, to be honest it's a miracle she's still alive the amount she eats. I think it wil be a matter of days, but I have some Harrison's recovery formula arriing today so maybe that willl hel...
