Re: Build a Bug House Competition - CommentsDoes it have to be a photo of a new-built bug house, or can it be an existing one?

Re: Build a Bug House Competition - CommentsFunny, I was thinking that last night.
I think an existing one is fine. I see this as an incentive for those who haven't one to build one. That way, if you don't win, the Invertebrates do !! Richard New Member? Get more from the Forum and join in 'Members Chat' - you're very welcome
Re: Build a Bug House Competition - CommentsPosting this here as I can't claim it for my own but I thought it might give some ideas of what can be used. In the next village along to me is a residential college for young people with learning difficulties and or disabilities. They have a great area of woodland where the students of the land-based studies learn and put into practice plant conservation etc. It is a wonderful place to walk the dog and I see changes every time I go. The insect hotel is just one of the fantastic things they have done. Anyway, end of bibble, I just wanted to share!

Re: Build a Bug House Competition - CommentsMy entry for the competition Bug Hotel for all tastes is made from "recyclable" stuff - empty 2L pop bottles with the top cut off, and each has a different environment - straw/leaf litter, some clay pot pieces, compost, squashed toilet rolls and one filled with pine cones (I also wanted to fill a bottle with twiggy sticks but ran out of space) Some old material and paper stuffed in between for both a little insulation and hiding places, and all the bottles inserted into an old mop bucket. The "roof" is a lid from a box made of corrugated plastic for added waterproofing.
I'm hoping to make a series of similar bug hotels based on the pop bottle idea of different environments dotted around the allotment plot before winter and hopefully ladybirds and other beneficial insects can use them to hibernate in.
Re: Build a Bug House Competition - CommentsWhat a great idea LL, love it!
