CucumbersCucumbersI have two cucumber plants in the greenhouse and the leaves are going a bit yellow. I think if I am honest I have over watered them, so am keeping them a little drier.
If it is not that, does anyone know what it may be please?
Re: CucumbersIf the compost is very wet, then overwatering is a strong possibility. But, the sun strength has also been high recently and particularly in a greenhouse, it can be too much for some plants especially as the weather has been a bit on the cool side until now. One reason why I don't normally grow cucumber in the greenhouse but prefer outdoor varieties.
Re: CucumbersI used to lose alot of young veg that were in pots in the greenhouse through overwatering, some would rot before germinating. I think after years of trying I've finally got it right as every single one came up this year & all are doing well. I use a smallish water can with a rose & once a day (twice if its v hot) I run it over everything fairly quickly, so it all gets a good sprinkle rather than a soaking. Once seedlings have started to rot I found it hard to bring them back, you might be wise to plant some new ones as back up. - I'm presuming your plants are still small?

--Immanuel Kant Re: CucumbersThanks, LL and Kitla.
We have loads and I mean loads of pigeons round here who seem to take an enormous amount of pleasure from eating my plants when I put them out, so I usually keep cucumbers in the greenhouse for that reason. Blackbirds are a ugger too. These are not small, small plants and must be getting on for 9/10". The temp in the greenhouse yesterday at 9.30a.m. was 30 deg with two windows open and the door, then it got even higher by mid morning, but that was a once off and the cucumbers have been failing for about a week now. Thanks for your answers and I will get some more plants hopefully when the garden centres are fully open.
Re: Cucumbers
Hi Gwen like Lancashire Lass I like to grow my Cucumbers outdoors as well , had some success in greenhouse but find better outside. The last few lots I have grown I have a pot within a pot 4in pot in a 12in pot , cant show you a picture as not on photo bucket now ,looking back through my diary you should find one, the reason is I believe cucumbers don't like water to near the stem can cause rot so water the compost outside the 4in pot. Doing it again this year and doing well even with a lot of powdery mildew about ,its affecting my runner beans trying to source some new plants to replace some, seems humans not the only ones having to take care. Stay safe. Cut the bottom out of the 4in pot ,nearly forgot ,just in case you try it. Re: CucumbersJust reporting that cucumber plants are now thriving after slight hiccup again........
Had one cucumber from the largest plant and then the new ones that were growing flowers died and dropped off. Good news is that after a few weeks more growth is coming and both plants looking very good. Not sure what I did tbh, but looking forward to reaping the success whatever it was. |
