Victorian Pharmacy

Post by bluebell »

This programme proved to be quite interesting. Ruth, the lady from Victorian Farm programme is in this, together with a guy who is a proper pharmacist and a young helper.

Thank goodness they have decided not to stick to all of the recipes our great, great grandparents used. 'Volunteers' dressed up in victorian garb visit the shop, tell the pharmacist what is wrong and then wait for their treatments. Lady last night was pleased that the medication being made up for her cough did not contain opium and cannab1s! :-D

Anyone fancy the everlasting pill??? I cannot remember what the heavy metal used in it was called, but apparently once swallowed a tiny layer of the pill would dissolve into the stomach causing vomitting and diarrhoea to purge the person. Sadly for next member of family it would be retrieved from, um, er the first person's 'waste', rinsed and then swallowed by next member of family if needed. sile}

yike* There are advantages to be living now )grin2(
Didn't see it but it sounds interesting.
Today I will be ringing my homeopathic guy. He really is great, makes all the stuff himself. He sounds elderly, so will be missed when he goes.

That sounds gruesome Bluebell!

I think that there was often some method in what we now perceive to be their madness though!

I have to say I was pleased not to be eating at the time!

I'm looking forward to next episode though. Interesting to see how our ancestors coped with illness and disease (surprising how many of them actually survived, given some of the treatments).

Have to admit to closing my eyes when leeches used. They are 'orrible! yike*

It was a very good programme.

My second wife, Italian, had her tonsils out in 1957 with no anaesthetic, at home by a Doctor with her parents holding her down in a chair.

So, we don't have to look back too far !!

My Great Grandfather Matthew Cannon. He was a Pharmacist, then moved on to being an Analytical Chemist - he then, wait for it, worked for many breweries.

Thought you may like the pictures though.

This would have been around 1900 - 1905 by the look of age.....
