Cadging

Post by boosmummy »

Or whatever you want to call it i/we call it cadging.

Cadging is when you get something for free off friends and family, who dont want or need them anymore. This month i've managed to cadge a pair of hunter wellies and a nice wicker basket. Other things we have cadged a fridge/freezer a sofa set - we're too skint to buy them new.

I think the rules of cadging are look after the things you cadge, you never know if someone else will want to cadge them off you eventually, or if the original person will want them back.

What have you managed to cadge?

:-D :-D

Half the contents of my Grandma's kitchen  She is preparing for a big down-size, and was going to throw away  all kinds of things ... she's stunned that anyone would even want her old sugar/flour containers, because they're 'scruffy', but I'm well pleased :-D
I also think that it's good cadging karma to pass things on for free once you have no use for them. I was given a sofa as a temporary measure when I moved in to my first house, and passed it on for free to someone when I had enough money to upgrade.

Oooh yes, although I don't call it cadging. Cadging has conotations of trickery, swindling other people out of something to me so I wouldn't use the same name but................ all my friends and family offer 'stuff' to me before they throw them away. They call me The Womble )t'

Probably a regional thing but to me cadging is saying "Give me something because I'm to tight to buy it myself"

But yes I'm more than happy to take someone else's unwanted Items, even though I'd most likely not want to pay for them.

Yes I agree the the word has overtones of wheedling (maybe not actual trickery though).

It all depends if it works both ways. 'Can I cadge a cup of sugar?' is fine unless it's always the same person. You tend to notice if it is.

Absolutely loads of things over the years, including my house yike* , ( and my car, come to think of it ) But the latest thing was a sewing machine, very frugal.

It's a word I don't use - it suggests you ask for something- But I am always happy to reuse and recycle. )t'
Most of my things have been aquired as gifts from friends, relatives or employers who were only too happy for their unwanted things to find a new home.
The things I have inherited from family are the most precious to me.
