Having established that I'm a rubbish gardener and that it's cold up here, can anybody advise on tree pruning please?
We need to cut some trees back very hard - a holly that needs to come down about 2/3s, and bifurcated trees where one of the trunks needs to be removed and the crown brought down.
If I wait for the frosts to finish, the birds may already be nesting and anyway, I don't want to waste the trees' energies in supporting bits that will be cut off later. Am I over-thinking this? Should I just go for it and then seal the wound with something? Or cut them, leave them and let them fend for themselves?
