Free Hay

Post by Lawrie »

At this time of the year there is little to be had from Nature's Farm. However there is something that is still readily available if you have a patch of land nearby that was uncultivated last year. The chances are that the grass there grew high in the summer. In my case the cricket field at the back has a fence that the club's gang mower cannot get close to and so the grass and weeds under it thrived. By now all this has died right back and is tinder dry and so, on a bright sunny day with a drying wind, I go along with a stout bag and gather great handfuls of the stuff. It is fine as litter and nesting stuff for my few backyard hens and saves having to buy in a bale or two. Otherwise it is a patient wait until later in the year for more of Nature's bounty.

I see where you are coming from - good idea, just sort of comb it off as it lays in swaths sort of. )t'
