Tips For Day To Day Practicalities Please
Tips For Day To Day Practicalities PleaseHey guys its been some time since I've been here.
Things haven’t been going very well for us here, I had to have emergency surgery for an ectopic pregnancy (which didn’t go well leaving me quite ill and looking at a 6 – 12 week recovery period) In this time hubby is looking after the children and the animals and the house and working, (yes, I feel completely useless). And I'm just looking for practical time saving tips for him to use when caring for the chickens. They have stopped laying totally now due to the light I suppose (is this normal? ) and they are in by 5pm (their own choice not ours) so obviously the coop is getting full of poop pretty quick. Many people say to put a load of bedding and chipping down and then just layer it up, there is a name for this method but I cant remember it. But I'm not keen on this, especially if I don’t know if its going to work. Should we just poop pick daily and then change the coop bedding each week? I can manage this when I'm more steady on my feet, its just the mucking out and bending/carrying I cant do. On the plus side the new girls and the ‘old’ girls are best of friends now and some how hubby has stole my chickens and they now run to him and jump up to the fence and eat out his hand! Id be greatful for any ideas please x *Mother Nature*

Re: Tips For Day To Day Practicalities PleaseI poop pick daily as I don't like the idea of them sitting in their own droppings.
I hope you feel better soon. I dread getting ill as I know my hubby wouldn't cope with looking after the pets and kids. Tell your hubby that he is doing really well. Re: Tips For Day To Day Practicalities PleaseSorry sorry to hear you been so unwell.
When i had my chucks i did the deep layer of shredded paper,(on top of a thick layer of newspaper so it could just be rolled up and composted) with straw on top be be cosy, with daily poo picking (i used gloves and a scoop normally used for cat litter) then a big clean out once a week, however that was in the summer. I have chickens Blaze, Star and Comet, who have met Sunny Clucker in Cheshire :-)

I have a shed for my chooks, this has a thick layer of Aubiose all over the shed floor, this gets poo picked each day, this has been down for a month now, and is fine i just remove the poo each day before bedime, my nest boxes are breadtrays, these are lined with paper then Aubiose, then straw, the staw gets shaken out each day, which takes about 5 mins to do, some dont like the deep bedding but it works for me Bev xx

I can understand what you are both going through from your husbands point of view as Mrs Al had an ectopic pregnancy earlier in our relationship. you both have my deepest sympathy. As for your chucks I think you are talking about deep litter. I have tried this but to be honest I think it may work for horses etc but with the hens I found the build up of amonia in the coop very strong. As has already been said a five minute poo pick each morning is in my opinion better. I use shavings and find them far easier than straw to poo pick from. Re: Tips For Day To Day Practicalities PleaseSo sorry to hear you've been poorly. Big hugs to both of you
I use about 2 or 3 inches of easibed in my coop on top of a thick layer of newspaper. I poop pick daily with salad tongs and 'fluff' the easibed up when I've finished. Then I give a proper clean out every week, sometimes a little longer if they've been out for longer. You could try an offcut of vinyl under the bedding on the coop floor (keep meaning to try this myself) as it can just be lifted out and wiped when cleaning. Sounds easier than scrubbing a wooden floor and trying to dry it out in this weather Lucy x Lucy x

Sorry for your plight mn.............I am no expert,as I have only had my 6 girls for 2 months. In your situation,I would poo pick every two days and once a week I would replace the shavings in the house. Get well soon..................Steve. Re: Tips For Day To Day Practicalities PleaseThe vinyl sounds a good idea. I have feed sacks down on th floor of my arc. Plastic first then paper (split open) on top. They are strong enough to pick poo off daily, and replace when mucky. Might not work if you have a big shed.

Sunny Clucker enjoyed Folk music and song in mid-Cheshire Re: Tips For Day To Day Practicalities PleaseGo on taking it easy for as long as possible - getting well again is your first priority.
I have newspaper down on the floor of my coop and it gets changed every day - it's so easy to pull out the paper, wrapping up the droppings as you go, and throw the lot in the compost bin. I have a piece of vinyl down underneath (with poultry shield and diatom liberally sprinkled underneath that) so if there are any leaks it's simple to wipe clean. Re: Tips For Day To Day Practicalities PleaseNothing to add to what's already been suggested but I do hope you are feeling better soon and can at least get up and about without any pain.

Re: Tips For Day To Day Practicalities PleaseI do the same as the above, poo pick daily then a big clean out once a week.
Sorry to hear you had a big op and have a long recovery time. I had a hysterectomy in January so was out of action myself for 3 months. My chooks were a great distraction to me and I loved having a little walk to see them a few times a day. It did me the world of good! Hope things get better for you and you make a speedy recovery....enjoy your chooks as well Owners of some very spoilt and loved chooks - Aggy, Dolly, Molly & Rosie (RIP Hetty & Maud)
