I don't think about it these days, but I remember when I started, a bit over a year ago, I realized my first few eggs had cost over £20 each! I really appreciated them then, not that I don't now, they still taste really good and are a delight to cook with.

Also, no mention of vet fees!, one or two visits can blow the calculation out of the water!!. My six have cost me a small fortune, however, I know where my eggs come from )t' , and I will never buy a supermarket egg again, freerange or other! )t' )t'
Can't put a price on good quality food )eat( ..

I did a quick outlay verses (financial) return and basically I reckon if I'm lucky they might just pay for themselves in their lifetime but I'm not holding my breath :-D

I don't care what they cost. As I have said before, they have been my sanity over the last 9 months. Give hours of pleasure (cleaning too) but .... Need I say more? They are just great and the eggs ....

Until today, we have spent little on our hens. The hut was from freecycle, and we already had wire netting, though we bought some small gauge costing around ten pounds.

Today we have paid twelve pounds for wood chippings, extortionate I thought, until we coughed up eighty four pounds for corrugated plastic sheeting to keep part of the run dry. There will also be the cost of two x four posts for the sheeting.

My hens given to me for a donation, and we bought layers pellets, corn and grit to start off with.

OH is commenting about the cost of each egg, but I have paid for the plastic and timber, so he had better keep quiet, or no more baking!

I love my girls to bits.

I've just struck a deal Mrs Orfy.
We've just sold our first eggs and she wanted to piggy bank it and use it to pay for feed.

We've agreed I will pay for the feed and the Girls will pay for my beer. :)

My girls will pay for themselves when the next full moon falls on February 29th, which will be in 2048, seriously it will take that long, even though I sell their eggs now
