what do you do with your hens that have died

Post by morbidia »

I lost two last year and buried them in the garden but I found out today that you aren't actually allowed to do this and they should be incinerated,as a keeper of exbatts I am likely to lose hens again in the future. I was just wondering what people did in this situation

We've cremated ours on the Rayburn saved the ashes and scattered them.

Iv'e lost three hens and all of them were left at the vets to dispose of (sounds horrible "dispose of" but don't know how else to describe it)

Mine have been put into a box, double bagged and put into the wheelie bin. It sounds awful but couldn't afford the fees the vets charge for 'disposal', can't bury and not allowed bonfires here {cry}

Well mine get buried in the garden as do any other family pets. I couldn't bear to do anything different.

If the vet has to pts then they dispose of the bodies - actually only charges £15 . If they die at home then they get bagged and put out in the wheelie bin. I have always had cats and dogs and even though its not 'allowed ' they are buried in the garden but our garden isn't big enough to cope with the hens too alas
It will be alright in the end , if its not alright, it isn't the end .

I have done a mixture of all the above. I do what feels right at the time.

I put mine in the brown bin (green waste) and then they are turned into compost

I wonder why you can't bury them? Seems a very natural thing to me. As long as they are deep enough not to be dug up by foxes and vermin. Does anyone know why you're not allowed to?

It's because they are classed as livestock, not pets {cry}

One I left with vet, the other three are buried in the garden under the forsythia tree. They are buried in a circle, each one has a flat slice of tree wood with their names, so I know exactly where they are.

I work at a vets so can either take into work to have taken away to pet crematorium or I stick to guidelines and dispose of hens at home by cremating them.

My first two were buried in the garden with a slab over the top. Then one of them was half dug up. yike* So I left my last hen at the vets. As far as I know they didn't charge for disposal, but I cant be sure of that as I got one bill which wasn't itemized.

Mine was put under a hedge in a huge field in the country so that nature could take its course.

We cremate ours (that's a nice way of saying they go into the incinerator in the veggie patch) and then they go onto the ground ...circle of life.
