Hello! and advice re auto sexing chicks please.

Post by Snoopy »

A big hello to DTL.

I hope someone can give me advice on the easiest chicks to s.ex at birth.
The time has come to hatch some chicks as I am now down to one non-laying hen enjoying her retirement.

I have looked at Cream Legbar male and female chicks online and the differences look fairly obvious in the pictures but....is it really always so straightforward in reality?

Are there any other chicks which are really easy to tell the difference between (apart from Warrens...that's another story).

Legbars are pretty easy to tell apart although there is the occasional one that makes you think a bit. They're the only auto sexing chooks we've hatched so can't advise re any other breeds.
Hope that's some help.

Thanks Dom,

I will need to be ruthless with the cockerels, I will not give them any names, nor look them in the eye, they will not make it to the brooder and I will become very unpopular with my youngest child (for a short while), so I have to be sure.

Oh dear, I sound mean.....I'm not really.

Always best to be prepared with a plan of what to do with the boys )t'
We do the same with Legbars but our Orpingtons have to grow quite a bit before we are sure which are which but I won't say whay we do for fear of causing upset.

PS Ali got 24 Legbar hatching eggs last Saturday so a while before they hatch.

Candled them last night and of the 24 there were 17 fertile. And so the whittling process begins.
