Any advice for winter?
Re: Any advice for winter?it's boiling water that freezes quicker because of less oxygen in boiling water than cold water "simps"
Re: Any advice for winter? It is known as the Mpemba Effect, named after a 19 year old Tanzanian student who noticed it when making ice cream in the early 1960's.
Having said that, comment was made as early as by Aristotle and Descarte. Having also said that, I should not have just said it was 'true' It most certainly occurs but there are many variables which we can all research if we can be bothered.... In my brief research, neither latent heat nor 100C was mentioned. Far more important is that hens can't drink ice! Cheers
Re: Any advice for winter? If I remember correctly there was quite a detailed thread on this subject last winter and I can't remember who it was, it might have been Mike and Jonny who explained in detail then Lindaxx
And then there was one, Again!!!!

Back to hens now.....
Re: Any advice for winter?lol, no, I'm sorry Mike - I wasnt really having a dig at the 'off topic' bit..
more that the whole frozen boiling water bit was very interesting, but 'chickens cant drink ice' was an understandable, less scientific statement of fact "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid"
Albert Einstein Re: Any advice for winter? No worries Willow. I hadn't thought that. We just change the outside water morning and afternoon and our shed/coop seems to keep it liquid through all but the very worst days. We get plenty of water into them with sloppy warm mash too, again twice a day. They also eat snow as if it's candy floss, and drip droplets off the wire as it thaws during the day
First proper chilly day of Autumn here today. We thought last winter pretty brutal but the only uncomfortably cold thing up at the hen house was me - the hens just got on with it and as their 'left alone while we are at work' run is dry they dust-bathed in minus temps - pretty hardy little things when healthy. I am keen on getting them out of the wind though and have re-installed all the protection I took down in the spring. The cold is later and later in coming to my mind so we'll be in for a shock after Christmas no doubt. Best wishes Willow Mike
Re: Any advice for winter?Maybe to stop the water freezing you could use metal dog bowls on bricks?...........
Re: Any advice for winter?I change my girls water twice a day in the winter but as they FR a lot of the time I keep an extra bowl just outside the patio doors which gets the heat from the house and takes longer to freeze .

A day of creativity with cardboard, straw and bubblewrap to look forward to Re: Any advice for winter? We used an old piece of carpet and a folded builders bag on top of our plastic hen hut during the past three winters. The roof of our run was covered with corrugated plastic, and OH tacked plastic sheeting round the sides to prevent rain blowing in.
