no eggsno eggsI've had my 5 chickens a fortnight tomorrow and even though they wasn't in the best of shape when they come they've put on good weight and are looking really good. they're all comfortable and i know two of the girls are only young but of my two big rhode islands only on lays me a egg every other day. annie's old so will probably never lay anymore ,but the one that has been laying hasn't done for four days now. how long do you reckon before i'm getting eggs?
Re: no eggsDepends on whether she is starting a moult!, also the short daylight hours has an affect on egg production!, they also could still be settling in to their new environment. I originally had 6 hybrids, now down to two, the last egg I had was probably almost a year ago!, have been buying eggs for a while now, my last two girls have retired!
I am old and wise, because I was young and stupid!.
Re: no eggsYou might get a blip ....they have so many eggs so to speak in the tubes....the move may have been the thing that stressed them so you might get a break and then she'll start again.
That being said though you're also in winter so the egg laying can be hit and miss because it's stimulated by light levels.....often there's nothing wrong there's just not enough light to stimulate the pineal gland for them to lay....I wouldn't worry. ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨)✰

Re: no eggsI have 11 hens: one is a pensioner and no longer lays, three others are quite elderly, three are moulting but the other 4 are usually reliable. Last week I only had 10 eggs all week. The weather brightened up on Saturday/Sunday so yesterday I had 3 eggs and 4 today.
Bea; 19 hens (most of whom I intended to get); 6 bantams (which I never intended to have); old Benji dog and young Toby dog (who I definitely wanted). Three years into country living and loving it.
Re: no eggsI've had absolutely no eggs for weeks now, they just haven't started again since
their moults. Oh well it'll do them good to have a rest - I suppose (sigh) "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
--Immanuel Kant Re: no eggslol kitla, they were in bad shape when they first come and now look lovely so thats one bonus i suppose.
Re: no eggsUps and downs, swings and roundabouts.
I too haven't had any eggs since probably September all be it mine are getting on. Luckily there's a Farm Shop very close and only £1.30 for six large eggs. The main thing is to make sure they're on a good diet, well housed and let nature take it's course. Richard New Member? Get more from the Forum and join in 'Members Chat' - you're very welcome
Re: no eggsI'm surprised how many people tell me I should put a light in the chicken shed - particularly since they know that OH is a retired electrician. They look puzzled when I say that I think my ex-batts and elderly ladies deserve some down time.

Re: no eggsthanks richard, they're eating really well on a mixture of layers pellets and mixed corn and are looking 100% better than they did when they first come I wish i would have taken before pictures now because they look great apart from the moulting.
Re: no eggsToo right about the lighting Bea - I'm totally against it. They're just going against the seasonal plan of things, they'll end their laying days earlier and that's not good news long term.
Main thing is you love them. Richard New Member? Get more from the Forum and join in 'Members Chat' - you're very welcome
Re: no eggsI have been buying eggs for months now. My girls are having a well deserved rest

Re: no eggsI seem to be lucky with mine still getting 3-4 eggs a day from 8 chickens
Re: no eggsNo eggs here for a couple of weeks. The three youngest have never laid yet, to my knowledge, but I got an egg on Christmas Day and, again today My two gold laced wyandottes (Hattie and Sarah) have very red combs and wattles - suspect it is one/both of them Never caught either in a nest box, but Bernard currently thinks they are his favourites!
The three silver pencilled (Tara, Tuna and Buzz) laid lots over summer and autumn, but all 3 now have pale combs. Chicky-boo, the buff laced, has produced diddly squat and looks as if she never will Having bought free range eggs from the supermarket, hubby remarked how much he preferred ours I mentioned there was room in the coop for a couple or three more birds Re: no eggsI have 3 exbatts a light sussex and 2 speckeldys and get 1 egg every other day, i think they are all close to retirement age but they still give us all great joy......i think they knew it was christmas because we got 2 eggs on the 25th !! very clever girls. We have been buying eggs for a few months now as we were getting so many in the past that they played a part in the majority of our meals just to use them up. We have been getting blue eggs from the local chaps down the road who has a small flock of backyard hens so i think we will treat ourself to some araucanas next year.....and more exbatts too.
