First Egg of The Year....

Post by HedgeHugger »

My old lady, the last one left of the trio, has laid her first egg since last year. (she laid about 6 last year !).
She's gonna be 8 years old in a month or so.

Was she an ex batt or a youngster when you first had her?
My 7 ladies that are almost 2 years old now have given me 45 eggs so far this year, so will be doing some baking and freezing of them.

I got the ladies when they were 6 weeks old. A lady local to me had raised a few chickens herself, my neighbour told me about them and we trundled off and met the chicken family. A couple of weeks later we toddled off with the cat basket and brought a trio of mini dinosaurs home :)
The one left now has always had short laying seasons, getting shorter every year.
She is also a bit of a mimic (very badly). She tries to crow! has done since she was little, she was also the boss lady. She also used to try and talk to the jackdaws, that was fun!
She could never quite copy them and just sounded like she was being strangled, rofl.

Holy Thread Resurrection, Batman!!

My old lady is still going.
She has laid twice this year. The first had such a thin shell, it was cracked open were she laid it, the 2nd I managed to rescue, still a very thin shell though. Not really bothered if she lays or not, but just hoping they pop out with no dramas.

She's 9 this year. Still looks like a 2 year old :)
She acts like she hates being touched, but if she gets up on your lap, she becomes a feathery embarrassment to chicken kind.

Do you give her anything for the shell. Limestone flour + cod-liver oil has been recommended here, and I found it helped a bit, though not surprised the shell is thin at her age. As you know (but in case others don't) thin shells can lead to problems laying, and if they break inside she really has got trouble.

What breed is she - hybrid or posh?

She's a Welsumer. I've been giving her some porridge oats and limestone flour, sometimes she eats it, sometimes not, but that's only been a recent thing. I guess time will tell if it is helping.

One of her sisters had an egg break on the way out. I did manage to get that out. Warm bath, latex gloves and vaseline, oh joy! Not looking forward to ever having to do that again. :)
