Layers meal or layers pellets

Post by Ryan »

Will be going to buy a 20Kg bag of food for my chickens (before they get here) and the place I go to have the two options:

- Spillers layers meal
- Spillers layers pellets

The meal is supposed to have all the bits a layer needs (so I am guessing grit and oyster shell in there as well).

They are both the same price as well (£7.95 a bag)

Unfortunately didn't have time to ask the guy there about which one would be better so any opinions greatly appreciated :)

Ta!

Hi Malefic!

They are both the same i have used both!

My girls like the mash as i mix it with warm water, but at the moment because of the cold weather i am using the pellets they are much easier to use!

I have bought Grit/oyster shell that gets thrown into the run a couple of times a week!

Hope this helps!

both should have everything thst the chickens need - vitamins, minerals etc so the choice is yours really. I went for the pellets for my girls and boys as i have heard they can make a bit of a mess scattering the mash - but then mine will through the pellets around too when they want!!

it may be useful to know what the girls are being fed on at their current home as sometimes they won't recognise pellets to start with if they have been feed on mash and visa versa

Thanks for the help both of you - everyone will get tired of my daft questions soon!

malefic, on here there is NO daft question. Honestly, we've all been there and I can tell you it's a learning curve, we learn something new every day.

One thing about the mash versus pellets discussion, mash takes them longer to eat but you will get wastage, whereas with the pellets no wastage, but they eat em up quicker.

Sorry, the above paragraph doesn't really help, does it. confused>

Good advice. I use Dobson and Horrell maybe a bit cheaper than Spillers.

Think we^ve been here before? Started mixing porridge, mash and pellets together with hot water and a bit of weetabix thrown in. They totally ignore it when I put it in front of them but their trays are empty when I get home! Mash is a £1 cheaper in Countrywide though.
